I have two of them and have always found them useful for gear indication as well as their other stats. I always wished they had HRM functionality as I ended up with a Polar alongside for the HRM function as well as their temp and elevation stats. I have seen several people with both. Aside from cost, their is no weight impact as such. I guess one could argue the looking down is just as good or just 'knowing' where you are is adequate. That said, I'd opt for the Polar. I started with the flight decks.

What about ease of use during the ride? Which seems taken care of with the Shimano from the start... I don't really like the display though.

The flight decks are controlled by buttons on the side of the hoods which I like.

I have one on our tandem. It works very well on that bike since I cannot look down to see which gear I am in. Our tandem, which we bought secondhand, came with the harness already installed, so I only spend $50.

Otherwise, I would have gone with a Garmin device. I used to have one for running and I liked that functionality.

I had a Flight Deck for a while but sold it. I would rather use a regular computer. With the control buttons on the hoods, I often accidentaly hit them while I rode. The only advantages to FD are being able to see what gear you are in and the virtual cadence.

It's very personal, I guess. What did point me in it's direction was the possibility to install it on my bike and the proposed ease of use. What I like to see when riding: just speed, time and total distance - oh and a screen light when riding in the dark would be nice. The rest is considered luxury, and not really necessary. I don't have to show off... though it should look good to me ;-) - which is immediately "a problem" as I don't like the looks of the Flightdeck screen and also the Polar types I saw do not really stand out. I now use a no-name type that also functions and look like crap, but it works and was very cheap...

I use the flight deck on a tricross I use as a winter commuter.
Specially the gear indicator. I haven't had a problem with the
hood buttons and I don't change menus too much.
Winter dark I use my helmet light to read the computers on
my bikes.

It's a basic cycling computer with the added bonus of a gear indicator. No biggie.
