I have an ongoing problem with inner tube valves failing. My presta valves always tear in that 1/8" rubber nub which connects the valve to the tube. This happens about every 300 miles of riding. I've filed and sanded the valve holes in the rims, and replaced the tape. But this hasn't helped.

I showed my latest torn valve to a wrench I respect. He said that when I remove the pump head from the valve, after inflating the tire, the head yanks the valve--and it's rubber nub--into the rim hole. No matter how gently I remove the head, that little nub is going to grow a hole eventually.

He said the pump head would come off the valve more smoothly if it had a little valve to bleed the air trapped inside it. He also said I should use threadless valves, as they're less likely to stick in the pump head while it's being removed from the valve.

I've ordered a pump head with an escape valve. I hope this helps my problem. I've been dealing with this thing since I got my bike, last November. Several times, I thought I'd solved the problem. But the valves kept failing right on schedule, every month.

Has anybody had this problem and solved it?

You're tightening the nut too hard.

Put a piece of electrical tape over the valve hole on the inside of the rim (clean the rim strip with alcohol and dry before applying) and push the valve through the tape... this has worked in a number of cases for me. But also verify your presta nuts are snug but not tight.

If you even thread the nut on the valve stem, it's on too tight. Throw it away and life will be better.

Yeah, don't use the nuts, and also, wrap a narrow strip (about 5mm) of some gaffer's tape a few times around the base of the valve stem before you put the tube in. This acts as a stopper, preventing the valve pulling through the hole in the rim.
