I got a weekend job and need to cycle for 10 minutes to get there. Plus I need one to get to my friends house which is about 5 minutes.

BMXs are nice and small so I'm thinking of getting one instead of a road bike or standard one.

Good idea or not?

I don't want to do tricks on it or anything, I just like that they're small and I'll probably get away with not cycling on the road.......

I'd recommend getting a BMX cruiser (ex: Volume Sledgehammer) if you're looking for a commuting bike.

Get a foldy if you want small.

I got a used KENT BMX for getting around; other than adding a longer seat post, I have not had to do anything to it.
Other options would be a "stingray" type bike with 20 inch wheels and a banana seat, and as someone else suggested, a folding bike. HOWEVER beware folding bikes - they are addictive- one is NEVER enough!

I ride a 20" bmx every single day for transportation (between 5-10 miles daily). I personally love it. Extremely manuverable, can jump just about anything.

I would get the Kink Gap XL if you are around 6' and don't want to shell out a lot of money

If something is dirt cheap and breaks that sucks.

I use a road bike. I bought a road bike new, used it for years. Wore that out, tried to save money with a $75 used bike and wasted more money than it was worth keeping it running. My brother bought one new for $200 that was also crap - cheap stuff breaks.

Find a used bike that has good components and no suspension parts to break. Find something from someone who is upgrading instead of "bought it, didn't like it" because that is probably neglected.

I've one bike, big and heavy for around town. It is over 20 years old - well taken care of. The only things that broke were 2 shift cables, a derailluer, some bearings, the seat and tires. It has a lot of miles. Find one of those old Stumpjumpers and keep care of it and it will last.
