Mesa Community Plans “Ride of Honor” on November 7th
The Not One More Foundation, Red Mountain Brumbys Cycling Club and the City of Mesa Transportation Department are planning a “Ride of Honor” on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 10 a.m.
Recently, there have been a number of collisions in the Valley between vehicles and cyclists that have heightened the need for awareness and action in our community. It is the mission of the Not One More Foundation that not one more cyclist is injured or killed on Arizona roads. Local and cycling community members are partnering with the Not One More Foundation to provide assistance to injured cyclists, educational opportunities focused on sharing the roads, and political advocacy to ensure legal protection for victims.
The “Ride of Honor” is a family-friendly educational event including a non-competitive 11-mile ride as a visual memorial to injured and killed cyclists. With an ever-growing number of cyclists in our communities riding to work, school, on errands, for fitness or fun it is imperative that both cyclists and motorists are educated to safely share the road.
The event is free and open to cyclists of all abilities from casual riders to professionals. Cyclists will model safe riding by wearing helmets, obeying traffic laws and maintaining a safe speed within specified bike routes and lanes. The ride will begin at Gene Autry Park on McKellips between Greenfield and Val Vista in Mesa. The ride route will make a clockwise loop using McKellips, Recker, Adobe and Lindsay Roads.
Details on the event will be available at http://www.notonemorecyclist.com, http://azbrumbys.com, http://www.mesaaz.gov/transportation and at local cycling shops.
