Hi all,

I'm a 45 yr old trying to maintain my health, since the 'ole metabolism has downshifted. I live in Davis, CA but I'm just one of those in-town riders on my hybrid, with baskets on the back for 4 bags of groceries or to carry things like my books and bag to my ultra-short commute to the neighborhood school where I teach.

Those lycra-bright people zipping around were always a different breed. Couldn't really tell one from another under helmets, outrageous colors and shades. All looking like stream lined creatures not quite human, a bit obsessed and going at speeds not meant for man outside of a car. And at certain times of the year I was aware of herds of them, going across the plains.

Then I started going out for longer rides (for me, that's 8-10 miiles instead of 2-5 around town), with no destination in mind. I got one of those little gadgets that tells me how far I've gone. I usually ride around the bike paths in the evening, and when I DON'T, I feel a longing. Anytime I get in the car, I wistfully look at the bike lanes. I find myself looking at power bars in the grocery store. Coming back from the library, I found that 2 out of my 3 books were on touring, and I also had 3 Bicycling magazines in hand to top it off.

It's like getting bitten by a gene-altering skeeter, that's taking over my thoughts and body! I'll also being taking the-step-of-no-return: I'll be joining the Davis Bike Club in a couple of weeks for their 'beginner's ride'! I'm going to turn into one of them!

Welcome to the forums! Yes! It is addicting! This spring I started cycling again. I could only do about 5 miles on my road bike, things hurt too much or got numb. I switched to a recumbent and am now commuting 18 miles home from work several days a week. (changed my route due to traffic and it added 2+ miles). Recently had a good physical checkup. There is one health risk to the recumbent though. I seem to get this big silly grin that spreads across my entire face the moment my butt touches the seat. There is no cure! Enjoy your rides and welcome to the forums!

I have boosted fair Davis on these forums. I used to live in Marin and my grandmother lived in Davis until this April. You have a very nice town and almost enough cyclists. I will most likely visit on our yearly trip to the "bay area". A friend told me that I could borrow his bike if I bring my own pedals to replace his clipless ones, but my wife would freak out if she found bicycle pedals in our lugage. I'm tempted, though!

Hi iceratt,

Oh, do it anyway! Have you been on the new section of bike path, the Putah Creek Bike Path, which opened in October 2000? (Built over 18 months at a cost of $4.5 million, the 12-foot wide Putah Creek path crosses under Interstate 80, connecting South Davis to downtown and swings right by Jamba Juice, Borders, and a Ben & Jerry's Ice cream parlor!) It's beautiful, right along the creek. I still haven't ridden all the bike paths in this town!

Well, you certainly know the important things about biking :D !

45 is a great time to start biking. I waited until I was 58, missing all of those years. However, I am making up for it now! :)

I have spent some time now introducing the owner of our new gym to some of the wonderful biking trails we have here in the Denver area. We did Cherry Creek Recreation area today, and he was MOST impressed, having spent some time biking the dry wash trails in LA.
