Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - how do you brake ?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I usually hang out at other forums around here, this is the first time I come here, and I see all these bikes that have no brakes. How in the hell do you brake ?

I tried the old school method of gloving the front wheel yesterday, it worked surprisingly well. You reach under the handlebar and brace the top of your forearm against it, then push down flat handed on the top of the tire. I did a slow controlled slowing, I would not recommend it for anything else unless you are proficient at it.

I usually just jump off my bike and let it keep going until it eventually hits something or falls over on its own.

For me breaking has usually been a result of falling off of my bike. I have broken my collarbone twice and recently broke both elbows.
Brakeing is completely different. It's over rated because all it does is slow you down.

I usually ride up one of those "runaway fixie ramps" they have all over the city. They started installing them in the past couple years. You can usually find them right beofre a dangerous intersection.

I thought that was what pedestrians were for.... I mean, they are softer than cars and lamposts.
