BMX - Pedals go round when not pedalling?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I was testing out a bmx and when I cycle you can't just stop pedalling because the pedals keep going round! It's so annoying but it was a nice bmx and really cheap if I buy it.

Is there an easy way to fix this or not?

thanks

It's already fixed. You'd need to replace the fixed cog with a freewheel cog to coast.

how much would that be? is it difficult to do?

Post a close up picture of the rear hub, so we can look at it

sounds like a fixie to me. bmx bikes are never fixed gear, unless someone wanted a fixed gear bmx cruiser

OR it COULD be the free wheel is just stuck, in which case a little penetrating oil will free it back up

Blast it with WD40, give it twenty minutes to soak in, and go ride. When it comes time to stop pedaling, hold your ground.

I don't understand what that means?

Do the pictures help for how to fix this anyone?

The freewheel is rusted together
You can buy a new one from the LBS for 19.00
Try the wd40 first

When you stop pedaling, stand on the pedals, and don't let them turn, while you're still rolling. If you can't break the freewheel free, you'll need a new one.

A new freewheel and chain seem to be in order here.

Just remove the back wheel and take it to the bike shop and tell them you need a new freewheel installed.

Worked perfect!

Had to give it a couple of goes and went a lot faster and then slammed back against the pedals and it came free.

thanks man :)

Now that it's free, be sure to lubricate it again and often.

No worries. That's what we're here for. As someone already mentioned, you'll want to get some proper lube in there, and on the chain now. WD40 is not a lube. And plan on a new chain and freewheel when you have the money. They looked pretty beat.
