Touring - Journal of my recent trip around Switzerland

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

From September 2nd to 16th, I rode a 500 mile loop around Switzerland. The trip started and ended in Schaffhausen on Switerland's northern border. I went clockwise to and down the Bodensee, down the Rhine river valley, up to the Wallensee, over the Pragelpass to Lake Lucerne, over the Brunig Pass to Interlaken, from Interlaken to Gstaad by train (I was finally learning how to tour in Switzerland!), then by bike to Bulle, over to Estavayer-du-lac on Lake Neuchatel, north to Solothurn, north to Basel and then east back to Shaffhausen.

It was a wonderful tour with some stunning images I will remember as long as I live.

I've completed my journal for this ride and have published it here (http://www.biketouringtips.com/showJournalPages.php?jid=30). Be aware that I take lots of pictures and like to put most of them into my journals so each day's entry can be a bit long.

Not only is it great to go through the trip again but I am surprised that it takes longer to write the journal than to do the trip itself!

Let me know if you have any feedback or find any obvious mistakes so that I can correct them.

I drove through Norway a couple years ago and the views made me drool at the idea of touring it by bike (though my knees were screaming at the idea :P). I think your journal has just bumped Switzerland to the top of that list. :thumb:

Need to put in a couple tours in Sweden first. Parts of the Sverigeleden do loop through Norway though and up at the northern most extention there is a loop that goes through a small bit of Finland and then back down along some of the fjords in Norway. I'm starting to calculate how long a trip from the tip of Norway and back home along that route would take me. :p

Gorgeous pictures and thanks for sharing!!

Very nice. I've been touring Switzerland for 6 of the 9 years I've lived here, and plan more trips in the future. To me it's one of the greatest places for touring. Thanks for sharing... I recognize many of the places in your photos.

Great writeup! Did not know they had such an extensive roadnet for bicycles there. The pics on day 2 will not load in my browser, the rest works fine. Lots of great pics by the way.

Excellent write-up and the pictures are amazing! It looks so idyllic for bike touring that someday I'll have to save up for a trip like that.

Very nice pictures. Anyone considering a bike tour of Switzerland should also know that they can leave their bicycle at home and find a good rental at www.bikeswitzerlandrentals.com
