Well I finished my second event. The weather went downhill as of friday night when a major coldfront pushed through. friday the high was in the upper 80's the race day the weather was 49 degrees with winds out of the north at a steady 15 mph with gusts to 20 mph out of the north. due to the strong currents in the ocean they called the swim portion of the race and turned it to a Run Bike Run event. now i really consider myself to be a slow runner because my last tri I did the run time Ii had was 31 minutes for 5k. However Ii do consider myself to be a strong swimmer so this race was stacked against me in the fact my strongest event was gone. so the distance for this was 5k run, 20k bike, 5k run.
the start time was bumped to 8:30 am to allow it to warm up a bit which it really didn't help much. there were originally around 140 ppl signed up for this and 92 actually did it if that tells you anything.
We lined up at the start for the run and were off. I was up front for about 1/4 mile when people started one by one passing me, I figured this was going to be a long race and i didn't want to burn out. I finished the first 5k in 24 minutes and change, get into transition and back out. immediately start passing bikes. wind at my back i was able to get up to speed quick and pass a few riders and start to hydrate myself. i passed at least 15 to 20 people on the bike only being passed by one rider who was evidently a high lever biker riding an expensive lemond bike. at the turn around point was when reality struck the wind was horrendous but i was able to continue to pass riders one by one. i struggled but made it to the finish with a time of 36 minutes. got into transition 2 for the second 5k run and my legs cramped up really bad to the point I didn't know if finishing was a possibility. I started running and had to stop and rub out my clafs for a bit then i pushed up. i took it easy for the first mile then stepped it up a little after to finish out with a 27 minute 5k. my total time was 1:32.05 including transitions. I ended up with a 23rd overall and learned that my running is improving alot saying I never ran 8minute miles ever. I am pretty pleased with my time. I do feel if this event would have included the swim i would have placed higher being i primarily an strong in swim then bike and run is my worst event.
