Personally I try to stay off Highway 97 once you get past the #6. Too much traffic. I usually opt out for Gore Road instead. Never biked to Mississauga so I'm not much help between Milton and Mississauga. Post your route when you're done.

I don't have a great deal of experience in this area, but I am just starting to commute NW Waterloo to SE Cambridge a few days a week.

I found Highway 97 from Robinson Rd. to dowtown Galt (following Main Street) to be quite pleasant. This was around 9am one way and around 4:30pm the other way. That part of 97 is not bad for traffic IMO.

Whenever I ride to Cambridge (my daughter lives there), I take the following route:

Starting from Queen/Roncesvalles in Toronto, pick it up as it seems fit to your location...

Queensway
-> Dixie Rd
-> Dundas (Hwy 5)
-> Highway 8 (at Peter's Corners)

Hwy 8 gets you right in to Cambridge on Dundas.

5 is pretty good going and 8 is much the same - it's a simple yet pretty decent route IMO. From my experience cars are pretty forgiving - and I've even encountered fairly heavy quarry traffic early in the morning, but as long as you're lit up and aware, they give plenty of room. I've never had trouble until I got back into the GTA area.

Thanks a lot Flimflam, that's excatly what I wanted to know. I just wasn't sure about hwy 8, if it was ok for cycling, I guess it's ok then. I live at hurontario/hwy 5 so it looks like a very straightforward route.

Scenic Routes we took:
From Mississauga head west on Burnhamthorpe Road, north on 6th Line (Milton area), west on Lower Base Road, short distance south on Burloak, West on 2nd Sideroad, north on Walkers Line, west on Britannia, north on McNiven, jog east on Steeles and then north on Twiss into Cambellville. Head west on County Road 9, north on County 559 and then west on Leslie Road West (becomes Concession 1) into Cambridge.
Return on Concession 1/Leslie Road to Campbellville, continue east on County 9, south on Sixth Line, east at Hornby on County 8, South on Sixth Line to Burnthorpe and head east to Mississauga.

Don't use Steeles.
