Had it with me on my bike yesterday.

Used it to open the door when I got home.

Then - it vanished. Ha, ha, very funny. :notamused:

Now that you've had your fun, would you let me know where you hid it?

It's on the floor, next to the desk.

I took a ride this summer out of Cedarburg, WI. Parked in the main town parking lot. Was out for about 90 minutes. On my way back in, I started searching for my car keys, but could not find them. Stopped and searched every pocket and dumped out my bike bag. Couldn't find them anywhere.

When I got to my car, there they were, sticking out of the trunk. This was on a '97 Acura Integra, which is the most stolen car in America (the '94-'01 models are highly desired for their parts).

Check with the campground supervisor at the USFS campground in Redstone, CO. At least, that is where I found mine AFTER spending a bunch of money for a duplicate set.

They are nice people.

The moral of my story is ... have you checked your front door lock?

When ever a key comes up missing, my spouse is responsible. I read some trashy statistic that females loose their keys three times more often then males. She really has lost her keys, several times. Once in a while mine get a little misguided.

Dunno where it is, but I know how you can find it

Get an emergency call-out locksmith, change the locks, pay - hmm what for a craftsman on call-out? - $300 plus taxes, mobilisation and out-of-hours

Your original key will be the first thing you find. Probably under the dusty table in the hallway, tiddlywinked into the shadows by your cycling shoes

Ask me how I know

Come on..it's right where you left it! geez
(I'm thinking in the lock would be a good place but that is just too easy.)

Please let us know the outcome.

Still no sign of the key. However, in the process of searching, I did find the camera that had gone missing for a couple of weeks (in the bottom of a backpack I hadn't used for a month); my auto insurance renewal cards; and my favorite cycling cap.

So, on a financial basis, I'm ahead - the cap alone is worth more than the price of a new key.

When are you next out riding, and where do you keep your good stuff? Don't want to cause untidiness whilst rifling through the possessions of a fellow 50+

I'll leave the key on the mat once the van's loaded up

Do your keys have a place to live?

Once I decided that I was entering a more forgetful era, I put a hook right near the front door...

It's saved a lot of time, believe me. :D

I have a ghost named Oscar who's been hanging around me for fifty years, always pulling pranks like hiding keys and tools, swiping books, going "bump" in the night. I haven't noticed him around for several weeks. I wonder if he has moved in with you? If so, you are welcome to keep him, as I have a wife who is capable of performing his duties.

If memory's a concern, you could punch in the number on one of 'em Dymo label makers and stick it under the keypad

As long as you remember to peel off the plastic over the adhesive. Otherwise, this advice is no good at all

I have a ghost named Oscar who's been hanging around me for fifty years, always pulling pranks like hiding keys and tools, swiping books, going "bump" in the night.

I had a very weird experience a few years back. My daughter wanted us to have a set of keys to her condo, and she asked me to make her an extra set too. I went to the key shop, made 2 sets, and put them on a cheap key ring so I wouldn't loose them.

Got home and put them on my desk, and forgot about them. My daughter called and asked if I had make the keys. "Yup" I said. "I'll give you a set to night." Went back to my desk where I had been working and I couldn't find them. I searched everywhere on the desk. They were not there. I did some paperwork, and went into the kitchen for some coffee. When I returned, the keys were there. Right in the center of the the desk. In plain sight.

Now I work at home, and during the day I'm home alone. But it was OBVIOUS that someone had been playing with me. I called out. Not one there. I searched the room. No one there. I called people. My wife was at work. My son was in class. My daughter was at work, as was her husband.

I have no idea how those keys just "showed up" in the middle of the desk I had just been working on. :twitchy: I still cannot explain it. It still weirds me out when I think of it.

Many years ago my wife and I were playing golf. When we returned to the car, I could not find the car keys in my golf bag. During the round, my wife used them and accidently put them in another identical golf bag. We had to call the locksmith and never got the keys back.

I have a place I put my keyes but the wife says it looks untidy just leaving keys around so puts them on the purpose built key rack she has in the kitchen. I get my own back by borrowing her car and putting her keys in my special spot for my keys

Please do NOT hang keys up on hooks!

In the UK this is a favorite fishing place used by car thieves. They really do get a fishing rod through a letterbox and they're off in your nice fancy car. The other trick they do is steal cars that owners have left defrosting in the drive - whilst the owner eats breakfast nice and warm indoors.

I keep mine in a drawer - it's a lot harder to fish from.

Tom Bombadil
10-20-09, 01:24 PM
I dropped them into one of your toilets. You should reach in there and search for them. If you haven't found them after an extensive search, then try another toilet.

Reminds me of the time I "momentarily" lost my wallet. A few years ago, I went for a ride on a popular MUP and about half way up the trail stopped to fill up one of my water bottles. As I got off the bike I looked back and saw, in horror, that I had forgotten to zip up my seat wedge. I'd clipped my car keys to the little "keeper", so those were safe, but my wallet was long gone. I started back down the trail looking on both sides of the trail, realizing that the chance of finding it was slim & none. That's when my phone rang (in my jersey pocket). It was my wife. Some child had found it along the trail and given it to his mother who, in turn, had called directory assistance and my wife. I met them about halfway back to my car in a parking lot and his mother handed back my complete wallet. I had no $ inside, but you can be sure I gave the boy a great, big "thank you".

Do what i do when I lose my keys:
Check your purse. They won't be there.
Look around the house. Go back and rake through your purse again. They won't be there.
Dash around the house looking while hollering "Where the %@#$ are my keys??!!
Go back and check your purse again. They will be there.
Works every time.

you laugh. at work in a secure safe room with a keypad entry. someone had carefully printed the keypad code to door on a white board just inside the door visible through the window of the door. I alerted the supervisor and it took them nearly a year to fix it by putting frosted glass in the door window. the note is still on the white board. go figure.

No, but I do ride a pink bike.

BTW, I have checked all the places mentioned above, and more. Key has still not showed up.

It's not hard to spot; it's my bike commuting/bike riding key - it's on a lanyard that I can wear around my neck, stuff in a jersey pocket or a bike bag. When I commute it goes right in my backpack.

Went for a ride yesterday on my touring bike, wearing jeans with a strap around the ankle to keep them out of the chain. Finished and went to lunch, realized leaving the restaurant that the ankle band was gone. Thought if must have come off and was gone forever. Halfway home, I noticed that it had slipped off the jeans and was around my ankle, just above the shoe top. I suppose the people in the cafe thought it was one of those electronic tethers the felons wear, or else some kind of fashion statement.

Tom Bombadil
10-22-09, 08:54 PM
I own 5 of those pants straps. Why 5? Because I keep misplacing them. I found that in order to guarantee that I can find one when I need one, that I need to have 5 of them.

The House Keys go in the left front pants pocket and the car keys go in the right front pants pocket.

Every time I lose one set or the other it's usually a case of having put them in the wrong pocket. When jacket season starts things get even more confusing!

When I returned, the keys were there. Right in the center of the the desk. In plain sight.

This happened to me yesterday searching for a card reader (http://www.datanetuae.com/english_site/sandisk_12in1_usb_flash_memory_card_reader.gif). It was on the desk exactly where I had looked minutes before. I decided that because it was standing up, and I was expecting it to be on its side, I didn't see it the first time I looked. I think one can be thinking of something else when looking, especially at our age. The eyes go through the motion, but your mind is somewhere else.
