Folding Bikes - NYTimes discovers you can travel with a bike

I bought my folder last summer when I was on assignment in Ft Lauderdale for the summer. It kept me sane on an otherwise very boring assignment. Hopefully articles like this will get more people thinking that they can continue biking even while traveling. Too bad the photo accompanying the article didn't feature a folder.

Which folding bike did you buy? Must've been nice + hot to ride in Ft Lauderdale in the summer.
Not having to hassle with airports, I recently took my Citizen Tokyo on a Bermuda cruise out of Philly. The folded bike fit nicely with the rest of our luggage in the trunk of a Crown Vic cab. I left the bag at home, bungee corded the folded bike to a luggage carrier and wheeled it aboard so security could instantly identify it. My mango Tokyo created a sensation among crew and passengers who saw it.

Are you saying the bike was not put into a protected hardshell? You just put it on the belt like luggage and it didn't come back damaged?

I walked the folded bike on and off the ship. We live in Philly and originated the cruise here. No airports. :) Anyone with a folder who motors to their debarkation port should give it a try. NCL has no problem with folding bikes, as long as they are stowed in your cabin.

Cool. I've been fantasizing about taking a world cruise (or in the scaled down fantasy, a Mediteranean cruise) and a folding bike is definitely part of the fantasy. How did that work for you? Did you get a lot of use of the bike in Bermuda?

It worked better than expected for me. I rode my bike all three days in port, visiting Tobacco Bay and other points in St. George. The ride to Tobacco Bay is all uphill, so the low gearing on my Tokyo worked out fine. I rode early in the morning as I'm not used to Bermuda's traffic patterns. A European cruise would be ideal for a folder. Once you cruise with your bike, you'll be hungry for more. Nothing beats having your own wheels. :)
