Yes. You can put a 7 speed cassette onto an 8/9 speed but will need to use a spacer between gear 7 and the lock ring used to hold the cassette on to the hub. Also you will need to adjust the rear derailer to shift properly.

If it is a HyperGlide cassette (lockring) - yes. It will work with a spacer.
If it is a UniGlide cassette (last cog threads on) - maybe. Some 8/9-speed freehub bodies are threaded for both Uniglide and HyperGlide. If yours is, the 7-speed UniGlide cassette will work with a spacer.

Actually, the 4.5mm spacer goes up against the hub flange. Then you have to grind off the rivet heads or remove the little screws that hold the cassette together. When you do it this way, the cassette lockring spins on normally and the smallest cog will be spaced normally relative to the dropout so little, if any, derailleur adjustment will be required.

The spacer needs to go on first, the lock ring is not threaded deep enough to clear the spacer and thread into the freehub. It will work fine.

Or..........just pick up a cheap 8 speed cassette. Obviously, you'll only be able to index 7 of them..... unless you have SIS/friction mode on your shifters....you may be lucky and be able to shift to all 8 cogs. If you have 7 speed rapidfire shifters, you're out of luck. Another thing, your current derailleur may not swing in far enough to access the largest cog even with the limit screw all the way out......you may be limited to the 7 highest cogs. Hope this makes any sense....

Thanks Retro. I had my LBS swap out my 7 speed cassette from an old wheel and put it on a new one. I noticed the spacer was between the last cog and the lock ring and figured this was the way it was supposed to be. The LBS told me I would need to readjust my derailer and indeed, it was off by one gear. After I adjusted it and reset the limits stops it works fine.
