Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - AMF Racer Road...?

so, i've been looking for a vintage road bike to turn into my first fixed gear bike. my budget is kind of limited for right now, and i found this today:

does anyone know if this was one of the "better" AMF bikes made? or will the frame break on me in the middle of going down a hill?

Both seem fine. The first one a friend of mine had many, many years ago.
Funny I remember that toe interference occurred. You know, making sharp turns while my foot was in the wrong part of the stroke. A tight set of frame angles, short wheel base. Bike looks like a 21" or 54cm. Good if you're 5'8", 9", maybe 5'10"

The MOTO is a nicer frame, are you sure it's spec'd for 700s, I suppose it is as many were. Anyway as a 58cm frame it's the outer limits for me @ 5'10", doable but not ideal as far as handling. I'm not telling you your size, just mentioning.

Try the AMF if you can. It's a lesser bike but you can feel the size.
Rest assured though that unless the MOTO IS too big, it's a better riding , cooler bike. It's an '80s for sure, less French,more standard than pre-1979 so no issues with component fit, all quite normal. Harder to buy the wrong parts than correct parts.

+1 The MOTO is a better deal. I thought about going for it myself, but it is too far to travel for a frame (although I drove almost as far to Charlotte a couple of weeks ago for another frame......)

The AMF is about as low-end as road bikes get. But if you just want something to get started with, that would work.

The Motobecane is a Jubile Sport, a mid- to high-end bike from the 1982 or thereabouts. There's a Vitus tubing decal, so it's a comparatively light, high-performance frame.

That said, I'd check it carefully if I were considering buying it. Can't tell for sure in those pictures, but if it's not just photo distortion, it looks as if the front end took a hit and bent the down tube and top tube just behind the head tube.
