Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Need tips - Andel, Sugino, Dura ace...which one?

I feel my lasco crankset is a ticking time bomb just waiting to destroy me. Ive heard that Andels are good for the money but how to they fare against the Sugino's(which i hear are noisy and have an issue with teeth breaking) and the dura ace?

one is $$ and the other is $$$. I've had no problems with my suginos.

Those Andels look like 2 piece, outboard bearing, splined units a la truvativ omnium.

The Sugino's are a 3-piece square taper design; the cranks are both pretty different.

I'd find out chainline on the Andels as well as if it's more cost effective to buy those as a unit or to pick and choose you crankarm/bb combo with the Sugino's.

The 144 BCD Sugino's are high quality, I've never heard of a Sugino 144 ring breaking before and noise probably has more to do with chainline. My SG75 cranks and bb matched to a rear phil give me a silent chainline.

Lasco is a 'ticking time bomb?' The lascos I've seen are pretty nice, beefy 130bcd SS cranks, and wholesale in MTL for $80. They also seem very similar to Pake cranks. Maybe you have a different version, but I know several courriers who use them brakeless with no problems.

I have the Somas, which I understand to be just a rebadged, square taper Andel. They feel better than a 600ex road crank, but not $150 better. I've ridden Suginos and they felt about as good as the andels, for the price. If money is no object external bbs, for all their bad rep around here, are a noticable upgrade

miche advanced is the way to go for quality and price. You can get a set for around under $150, with a quality chainring that won't warp or break teeth, has a 144 bcd, is pretty light weight, and it looks good.

If it were me and I were going for outboard, I'd buy the omniums. I have outboard bearing bb's on all of my MTB's; they're really low maintenance.

thanks for all the input so quickly. very much appreciated. ive only (before) heard negative things about the lasco's. my chainring bolts have pushed some aluminum aside on my ring, but thats the extent of MY experience with them. the andel's seemed ok for price according to some reviews. and i am riding breakless on rolling hills in CLeveland, OH. so there isnt HUGE backward force. i am gearing up to get a new crankset, as a general upgrade. so im not sure if i should drop good money towards a sugino, or an omnium; orrr towards a new wheelset.

I recently upgraded to a Sugino 75 crankset, and I consider it the all around best for the money (you can spend more, but you will get a marginal improvement for your money).

If you have the opportunity to closely examine and handle Sugino's 75-level components, the quality will make itself obvious.

Beautiful engineering and flawless manufacturing.

Money aside, I think I would prefer Dura Ace, and, for my next bike I just might go Dura Ace for the hubs, bottom bracket and crank set.
