Hey guys, I've been commuting daily to work for about a month now and the past week I've had some bad necks pains. It's shooting pain that happens when I turn my head to the left or to the right. My bike has drop handlebars, and I don't think they're even that low... I've ridden a bike almost my whole life but the past month has been my first bike with drop handlebars.
I actually took the past week off but my neck didn't really seem to get any better, and I rode into work today and now my neck is killing me :( Maybe drop handlebars just aren't for me? My helmet isn't too far forward and I was actually thinking about how much my neck was straining to look forward, and it wasn't that much!

My handlebars were pointed to far downwards and it was causing me pretty bad neck pain, i put the bars more parallel to the ground and the problem went away

Hmm I think mine are pointed more down than parallel to ground. Hah! This gives me a good excuse to take a break from work, Brb while I go adjust them outside :D

My helmet isn't too far forward and I was actually thinking about how much my neck was straining to look forward, and it wasn't that much! There's some chance that your neck problem is really a "neck" problem - as in spinal nerve irritation or damage. Sooner or later - you should get a professional to look you over.

Make your bars and hoods look like those in the attachment. Minus the bit of white bar tape under the hoods and the dirt and torn bar tape, and don't even look at the rest of Fred. ;) But make the bar tops and hoods all in one plane like this. Then ride with your hands on the hoods almost all the time. Look at photos of pros. Bar tops when climbing is good, hands in the drops only when pulling a paceline, riding hard upwind, sprinting, or trying to see how long you can hold 30 mph. If you are already doing all of this, try neck stretches and rolls. Normally one sees neck pain in those who are increasing their weekly mileage too quickly. And normally it goes away with a bit of rest and then a return to biking. And if it doesn't fit these "normal" standards, doctor or PT.
Shooting pains in the neck area turning your head to the left and right is not a good thing. I doubt a better bike fit is going to fix this problem. You should see a doctor sooner rather than later. If they rule out some kind of structural problem, then work on fit.

it's definitely a "muscle pain" (rather than the pain from a pinched nerve or something). i think it's this muscle on the right which looks to be the levator scapulae. it hurts when i turn my head either way more than 45 degrees but the pain is only on the right side of my neck.
anyway, here's some pics of how i just adjusted my bike. i only took an after pic, sorry! :)
the yellow line is about how i think it is now. and the red line is about where it was. looking at those lines, it was definitely pointed down, but now it might be pointed up too far. what do you guys-n-gals think? :crash:
also, i'll see if it goes away in the next week or so, and if not, i'll cool it on the bike for a few weeks and just run. i hope you guys are not getting the impression that i am taking this light-heartedly. i don't think it's very serious which is why i probably won't go see a doctor, but if it becomes WORSE, then i will definitely rest, etc.. thanks for the advice :)

adjusting my handlebars made my bike ride feel a lottt more comfortable yesterday. thanks for the tips everyone. i also got a good night's sleep last night and tried to sleep on my back. my neck feels a lot better today, but im still gonna rest for the next few days til it feels good.

Yeah, your yellow line is hip to the latest pro thinking. You're right to let it rest. It'll be getting stronger while you do.
Hello. I'm having similar problems with my set up. My arms, elbows, wrist and neck kill after just 10 minutes of riding. Adjusting the handlebars seems like it might be the ticket. Did you just rotate the whole handle bars or did you have to readjust the hoods seperately?

yeah i just adjusted my handlebars by loosening 2 screws

You need to raise your bars also. Put those spacers on top of the stem underneath. That will help a bunch.

I am having a similar problem except that is only hurts after turning my head to the left or downwards after 45 mnutes or so. If i stop and stretch it goes away temporarlily, but then comes back after 15 minutes or so.
