Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Using TWO u-locks

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Would this be ridiculous? Does anyone do this? Aside from the weight and overall hassle of carrying around 2 locks, think this would be an extra deterrent to thieves or just flat out overkill? I live in Philly and bikes seem to get swiped around here all of the time.
Do it. I do it whenever I have to lock up in/around campus or downtown areas. I have a Krypto NY Fagheddaboutit for the rear triangle/wheel, and an ongaurd pitbull mini for the front wheel.

just use a cable, its lighter and more convenient, also come over to www.phillyfixed.com (http://www.phillyfixed.com) and check it out since youre in philly.

Two U-locks clearly better than one but I think I saw a suggestion somewhere that two DIFFERENT locking mechanisms will slow them down more than two of the same. That would mean a U-Lock, then a large cable / padlock.
This is because what would get through one type of lock quickly wouldn't necessarily get through the other type as fast.
My old mountain bike was stolen on school campus cause I just used a cheap cable lock. Now I use a kryptonite chain lock and then another U-Lock.. and sometimes another cable lock when I leave the bike outside on school campus overnight lol.

Get a cheaper cable lock instead of second Ulock.

I use two U-locks. Carrying the extra lock doesn't bother me, and I feel much more comfortable when locking up for hours at a time.
I've seen enough cut cables to avoid that route.
two u-locks is safer, but bloody heavy.
lock the rear and frame with a standard u-lock and the front wheel to frame with a palmy (http://www.chariandconyc.com/palmyaluminiumu-lockblue.aspx).

I would figure by this point everyone would quit recommending cable locks. All they do is stop a grab and run. Any person with bolt cutters can cut through any cable lock with ease.
having the rear triangle and wheel locked with a u-lock is great, but for sure if you value your front wheel and lock outside over any sort of extended period of time, make sure the front wheel is in some way secure too. Small chain or second u-lock

I use two U locks whenever I am locking up for more than 10 minutes.
I wish everyone the best, but I wouldnt use a cable lock to tie down a garbagecan.

I use two different u locks and a cable lock. I still do not feel safe locking more then 20 mins.
if they want it they'll get it.
but yeah, two u locks is pimp ****.
i have one mini-u and one micro u lock that barely fits around a seat rail and cable end. i like this because i can lock my seat up or i can lock my crankarm to my chainstay. most of the time though i just loop the cable around the wheel and frame and then lock the micro u lock to a rim or seatrail.
the micro-u is about three inches wide and 4 inches tall.
ive seen someone use the tine ulocks from the krypotnite chains to lock their rear wheel to the seat stays

where are you locking up? baghdad?
obviously a large city with a plenty of theft...not everywhere is as pleasant as hayward, callifornia.

Generally speaking, if I have to use two u-locks to feel safe locking up my bike, I'm leaving my bike somewhere I really shouldn't. I typically use 1 u-lock, through the frame and rear wheel, locked to something. If that's not enough, then my bike isn't safe no matter what I do

I'm assuming you are being sarcastic. Have you been to Hayward?

pretty much. San Francisco. I am more worried about handlebars, or my seat being taken when locked like this. If I am going in and out really quick, I normally sheldon lock/cable front wheel. If leaving locked for 20-1hr, then double u lock/cable.

I am familiar with East Bay and CSU, sure. What's the deal with big bad scary Hayward? Seems downright middle class and safe to me -- hardly a crime-filled area like you seem to be insinuating it is. I'd feel safer locking up there than in many places in SF, NYC, Chicago, Philly...where bike and component theft are quite high and common.

Different locks, need different ( read : more ) tools ...
I think we can agree that bolt cutters are great on cables, but not so much on u-locks, also a cordless ( dewalt ) grinder is great for u-locks but a not so much on a cable. ( grabs/kicks & frays... pita. )
multiples of one type doesnt really slow anyone down, but when you have to switch tools, might be another story...

Actually, I kind of lied when I said to use two ulocks. I used to do that, but now I Sheldon lock and detach my front wheel and lock it up with the rest. I haven't had any problems with fitting the extra wheel in, even with the kind of tight fagheddaboutit lock.http://www.cicle.org/cicle_content/images/u_lock.jpg
This is almost the way I do it, but if the lock is going to the rear wheel through the rear triangle then the frame is secure and you don't have to also lock the frame, which is what gives me room to fit the front wheel in also (my NY fugheddaboutit is smaller than the big one pictured). Once I learned how to do this I stopped carrying two ulocks.

leave a lock at the place you lock up the most, and keep another you lock with you for short lock ups.

I heard it's better to carry two different types of locks rather than two locks of the same type. I think ssfg has a sticky about locks. I have four locks (yeah, four :)), two chains, one u-lock, one wire lock. But I only carry one lock at a time and leave the other three tied to a lamp-post. I dont need to carry the locks because there are only three places my bikes ever go: work (secure parking), home (duh), street-near-home (that's where I leave my other three locks).

someone cut my ulock and stole my new bike yesterday:(
i use a kryptonite ny fahgettaboudit to get my front wheel/frame/object i'm locking to, but run a cable from my back wheel to the u lock
in richmond I have never once seen a cut/broken u lock or even cable for that matter. unless the thieves are taking the broken locks when they're done(which I doubt), I don't really think that type of theft even happens in this city.
it's all opportunity theft. see plenty of wheels on what look to be abandoned frames stolen.

Umm, Hayward is far from safe and has way more crime than most Easy Bay cities. Ride your bike down Mission after dark and you will see many gang bangers on foot or in car just looking for something/someone to steal stuff. And I used to go back to Chicago every qtr. for business...yeah, you could not pay me enough to live in that city...take a wrong turn in S. Chicago and they will come right over to your car and try to open the doors. I'm sure every city has their high crime areas though, but I can only speak to Chicago as my least favorite.

rode from a friends house off tennyson back up to my place on upper "B" street (an actuall pretty decent part of town, for the NYC hater). it was probably around 10:30. scariest ride of my life.

I had a night class. I got out at about 9:00pm and found someone else's bike right where mine used to be. :twitchy:
It was a Pake that i had had bought a little over two weeks ago, it was almost all brand new parts except the seat and the wheels.
Today I looked in a near by trash can and found this

I live in SUCH a low crime area that carrying two locks just seems like such a hassle.
1 Krypto Evo Mini, Sheldon locked every time, everywhere (no quick releases). I live in Memphis, which sucks if you don't like getting murdered, but no one here gives a **** about bikes.

I got murdered in Memphis yet. Bummer vacation.
I read somewhere that thieves don't usually carry both cable cutters and bolt cutters. I might be wrong, don't trust me on that. But if i had to carry two NY fuggeddaboutit locks would be tooo heavy on top of the other things I carry. I would do a really good U-lock + a cable.

Since you actually have the lock, and if you registered your lock, when you purchased it.
You might be eligible for the "Anti theft program"
