rode my bike pass carl's schurz park on the ues today. saw a ta guy with a table asking bikers signing a petition to the commissioner khan requesting a separate protected bike lanes on the 1st and 2nd ave.
god knows the bike lane on 1st ave. is pathetic and hardly any existence of bike lane on 2nd ave. so i signed the petition. i asked him when does he thinks it will be build? he said probably by next year when they are done with the 1st half of the 2nd ave. subway project. keeping my fingers cross.
even if it happens, unless they provide pylons like on 9th ave (8th?) the hellcabs that notoriously favor 1st and 2nd will continue to make them not worth it.

if they don't finish the subway line that's the least they can do is work on a bike lane right

I think a painted bike-lane on 1st or 2nd Avenue would be either meaningless or annoying; the former if it changes nothing (as has been said, trucks and cabs would just ignore them), the latter if it validates drivers' feeling biking any place but in the bike-lane is wrong. What would be nice and very welcomed is a protected bike-path (like the one, for instance, on some of 9th Avenue), but I don't believe I'd sign a petition for anything less.

having bike in montreal...i can say their bike lane system is superior to nyc. most of their bike lanes are protected just like the one on 9th ave.
face it...owning and driving a car in nyc is a luxury. if u can afford a car in nyc and live in the city, then u can damn well afford a $400/month parking spot. i say get rid of one of the parking lane on 1st and 2nd ave. and put in a protected bike lane instead!
