Wanted: Cannondale 2004 RT1000 X/M

I am very interest in gettng a 2004 Cannondale RT1000 and the problem is where to get it at that fits my wife and I.

Does anyone know where I can order one in X/M regardless of color?

If you haven't done so already, check with Mel at TandemsEast. If he doesn't have one on hand he should be able to check with C'dale to find out where one might be. Oh yea, you don't have a choice on color... but it's a nice dark blue.

Back when I got mine in May, it was on back order for several weeks. I was told there was a shortage of Shimano parts. I think they didn't make enough of them - the bike is pretty nice for the price point it's at.
The bike stores around me that nomally stock Cannondale Tandems don't have any left. You may end up waiting until the 2005's are built.

I would never order a tandem from Cannondale. When I ordered on June 1 Cannondale told my LBS "end of June". When the end of June came they said "end of July". Now the bike is still not built and they are not even giving me a date. Cannondale sucks.

According to the Cannondale website their are two different colours to choose from. A dark blue tandem as well as a white one?? This is on their own website .. check it out. I have only seen the blue ones in all the promos etc. But their site definately states that a white colour is an option.

Yeah...Mel is great! My wife and I just picked up ours on Sat. He and George must of spend like 4 hours with us just setting up the bike while his wife had drinks and snacks out (it was hot). They setup everything from the bike to the rack. In addition, gave us some riding routes in the area.

One regret was that I already purchased some additional gear prior to going to Tandems East and I found out that his stuff is way cheaper than any store. IE, I got a pair of Cranker Bros. pedals for $70 where my local store sells for $130. One of advice, before buying anything check with Mel first to see if he has it.

So far, we put 40 miles on it and my wife is loving it. For me, I get to workout without her complaining about spending too much time away from her ...its a win win situation!

Indeed, Mel, & Barbara Kornbluh are very special people... as are most of the tandem speciality dealers. I cannot understate the value that they and their peers in the tandem speciality business add to the tandem buying experience. Their commitment to tandems, their experience, and their genuine concern for making sure first time and repeat clients have a positive buying experience and walk (or ride) away with the knowledge they need to "get off on the right foot", so to speak is invaluable.

Again, I would agree and would also suggest that you will often find this to be true of most of the tandem speciality dealers. There are a few who ask MSRP and go for max-margin on each sale, whereas others have enough sales volume to allow more attractive pricing or are just very good at finding wholesale close-outs and passing along the savings. Bottom Line: It pays to shop around and to get to know your local/regional tandem speciality dealers. I will always give them my business when I can as it supports their ability to remain viable and to "be there" for us.

Indeed. And, if you are fortunate enough to have other tandem riders in your area you could find that you'll have new friends for life. We have spent the last three Saturdays and Sundays riding with several of "the usual suspects" -- couples we met two weeks after we purchased our first tandem back in 1997 at what was then the third group ride for "The Tandem Club of Georgia". This past weekend highlighted just how varied the riding can be as on Saturday we tackled "3 Gap" in the North Georgia mountains with 4 tandems with one couple on their 1/2 bikes (tandem was still broken down in two suitcases after returning from European tandem tour of Austria a few days ago). 3 Gap is 50 miles w/5,000 vert. feet of climbing (part of Friday's Stage at this year's Tour de Georgia) where you can really get your jollies-off riding some awesome 4-6 mile long, twistie mountain road descents at 45 - 50+ mph. On Sunday, it was a far more sedate 36 miles w/2,200 vert. feet closer to home with two triplets (one couple from Sat. w/12 year-old son/stokid, and one couple from Sat w/6 year old nephew/stokid), two tandems, and three single bikes followed by a pool-side BBQ at one of the team's homes. One team -- our super go-fast team -- opted to ride with the racer boys out East of Atlanta at the Covington Century where they covered the 105 mile route in 4hrs & 16 minutes at an average speed of 23mph, and then dropped in for lunch. Again, the scope of the riding is only limited by your interests, time, and physical abilities and your activities can easily extend beyond the bike.

While this has been an unusually active schedule for our group, it underscores how tandeming CAN become a very integral part of your lifestyle IF you want it to as there are many tandem clubs throughout the US and scattered around the world who have similar, routine gatherings where you too may find other couples whom you can ride and share company with. Riding with other tandem teams is a wholly different experience that riding alone as a team, or even as a single bike with other single bikes and it is what sets tandeming apart from most other types of cycling: a rolling cocktail party, if you will.
