Bicycle Mechanics - I think my pedal is dying.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I finally got around to really cleaning my bike. When I was re-lubing everything I noticed a grinding sound coming from my right side pedal. It is a Ritchey ATB pedal, I have no idea what specific model. Anyhoo, can it be rebuilt or should I just chuck the set? The little rubber seal seems to be a bit dry rotted. I bought the bike new but it had been living at the LBS a couple years before I came along. The pedals came with it. I have put around 4000 miles on the bike.
This problem will probably also solve the annoying clicking sound I have been hearing from that side.
You might have some grit in your pedal. Left 'as-is', it will ruin your bearings and the pedal itself. Take it apart, clean it, re-grease it, and put it back together.
You should be able to get more mileage out of it. Pedal maintanance is not so difficult and pedals can be expensive to replace, so it is worthwhile maintanance.

Well, Play taps for my pedal. It's dead. I took it apart and the spindle is bent. Thanks for the advice. It was worth a shot. Damn..I really liked those pedals.

If you're looking for a decent set of low-cost pedals, check out Shimano's 520. It's a great performing pedal, good positive engagement, reliable, "open" mud shedding design, no frills - all for about $40. It's a heavier copy of their more expensive models.

Thanks! I have a set of the 520's already installed on the bike. I have used them on another bike and they work great. I really liked the ritchey's though, they are very easy to clip in and out of. I'm going to keep a watch for a sale and pick up another pair.
