Hey guys - I'm thinking about the VanNuys to Santa Barbara ride (http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/van-nuys-west/365095958) on Sat. Any reason not to drop down to the coast at Castaic? Just figured it'd be fun to be closer to the ocean for a bit. Is PCH ok through there? How about any farther south?

When I ride to Santa Barbara I usually do it this way:

Use Victory or VanOwen to cross the valley to Topanga Canyon
Head north on Topanga Cyn. to Santa Susana Pass
Head west over the pass into Simi Valley
Make a left on Los Angeles Ave. and cross Simi Valley
Los Angeles Ave will turn into Tierra Rejada
Continue on Tierra Rejada until it becomes L.A. Ave again (in Moorpark)
Continue west on L.A. Ave 12 miles or so until it makes a sharp right north
Make the sharp right and continue until you reach Telephone Rd.
Turn Left on Telephone and head into Ventura
Turn right on Main and follow it to the end
At the end of Main you will see a camp ground on your left
Enter the camp ground and you will see a bike path
Enter the bike path, this bike path is fairly short and will leave you off on the 1 hwy
Follow the 1 the rest of the way to Santa Barbara
When the 1 combines with the 101 there will be two instances when you will have to
ride on the 101. Huge shoulder- no worries
When you get off the 101 the second time go up the offramp and turn left continue to Capinteria
When you get to Capinteria I don't think you are technically on the 1 hwy but just stay on
the bike lane and it is easy to figure out the way

You get a little bit of everything on this ride.
