BMX - Having some difficulty.. Is it technically possible to convert a SS BMX hub tofixed?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have a Redline Monocog and am in the middle of working on my bike but am having some difficulty. The bike is a Single Speed mountain bike with a 110mm BMX hub. I would like to convert it to fixed gear. Now as I understand it so far, I can do one of two things - either I can try to locate a old 110mm track hub or (what I would prefer to do) is unscrew the freewheel and add a fixed gear sprocket. Does this sound about right?
I believe if it is a flip flop style hub that accepts smaller freewheels on the other side you can attach a fixed cog on that side, otherwise I don't believe there are track cogs large enough to thread on where the freewheel is. Good Luck

actually, i think the normal size thread on bmx hubs is the same threading as on older road hubs that use screw on freewheels, so no problem there. you still have the issue of no lockring thread, tho, so you'll have to go the loctite route.

Loctite won't do it. If you want fixed gearing, you really need a hub that is designed that way. You can always get a fixed gearing hub and new spokes and rebuild the wheel if it is really important.
Or, you can have your freewheel welded in place. If it is an old hub you don't care about, then that's the way to go because it is cheap and should be fairly durable after it is done. You will need the freewheel welded to the hub and the freewheel itself welded so it doesn't move.

you're absolutely right. unfortunately, the majority of track/fixed hubs are spaced at 120mm, and the Redline Monocog is spec'ed with a 110mm BMX SS hub. adding insult to injury, it's an aluminum frame, so it can't be respaced... not the best choice if you want to go fixed, but it's not my money.
oh, and loctite _does_ work for a budget fixed. altho when you consider the fact that lobo's a clydesdale-type, i'd really not wanna go there...

I'm way off on knowing the exact numbers for 110/120mm that you are speaking of since BMX really has been standardized for a couple of decades.
I do know that about a year ago www.flatlandfuel.com was selling fixed gear hubs for flatland bikes since Trevor Meyer, one of the top flatland pros, was running fixed gearing for a while. Shoot an email to Pat at flatlandfuel and you may be in luck with a hub. But, the cheapest way is still to weld it all. Just not the prettiest way.
