i've just purchased my first road bike and am looking to begin a weekly training routine. want to build strength, endurance, and overall fitness. can you recommend any online sites or books that will help me think-through the various components of a good training routine? thanks.

Ride down to your local library and see what they have. That way you can try before you buy a book.
Several good ones out there depending on who you ask and what type of training/riding you want to do.
The best book I can think of offhand is Joe Friel's "Training Bible". It's a great resource, and I think he gives a lot of tips and insight for training. Besides that, I'd recommend hiring a coach that can take you through the full year, not just a month or two. You can find coaches at www.usacycling.org. Specifically, go here:
