Hybrid Bicycles - giant cypress dx

I'm 59 years young and looking for a bike. I live in Clearwater, fl and we have about 50 miles in bike paths. I have been looking at the giant cypress dx and wondering what you folks think of it. Don't hold back, let me know what you think.

Giant makes nice bikes! They also deliver a lot of bike for the money!

Possibly, because they make new bikes for soooooo mnay manufacturers.

Usually, for the same money, you get better components on a Giant branded bike, because they make their own bikes.....

As Wanderer noted, Giant provides good bang for the buck.

My wife and I started out with somewhat similar Giant Suede DX's and found them to be fine on flat bike paths. If your paths in Clearwater are smooth, you may not need the front suspension or the suspension seatpost on the Cypress DX.

After about a year on the Suede DX's, we moved to Trek FX's (7.3 & 7.5) for more performance and climbing ability (Atlanta is NOT flat). FWIW, we still have the Suede DX's for "tourist" biking.

Darts...like you, I'm 59. I got a Cypress (not DX) a couple of months ago. I'm not an every day rider, but I've put on about 110 miles. If you're looking for a comfortable, upright bike for doing the paths, enjoying nature etc, the bike you're looking at should fit the bill. My only regret is that, living around Chicago, my riding season is winding down until spring.

Giants are well made, it's a huge very serious Co. They build for others that are good also. It's hard to go wrong with a Giant branded bike.
Cypress bikes are adjustable. You can move the h.bars towards or away from you.
this addresses a major concern to many riders. For instance those who've become more fit and may want to ride faster, can adjust the bike to suit. Just starting out or for any reason if a leisurely more up-right possiton's required, that too.

Just recently a man here replaced his older Giant for a newer. Having had his older model in the past, I asked him why. He responded with the adj. reasons. Makes sense as a sister of mine complains of her bike (an older giant) being to "tight". I've yet to give a different hybrid. I hadn't realized this so much about the Cypress 'till recently, even though I've seen adj. stems for years, just didn't click.

Well, I have a Cypress and a Trek 7100. I like them both. The 7100 is my first choice, mostly because that I was my first real bike:) I used the Cypress on short rides and often lend it to my friend on rides together. In my opinion, it's a good bike. It's light and rides really smooth. I would recommend it. I go much faster on the 7100, but that's because I really like to haul ass on that one. My sis-in-law in actually looking into a Cypress herself. She likes the fact that that frame/design is not killer on her back.

Just out of curiosity, why did you get the Cypress when you already had the 7100. From specs & photos, they seem to be very similar, both in appearance and components.

I have a Cypress (NON DX) and I love it. I'm slowly but surely changing it into a tourer, but I find it incredibly comfortable. As a person with a multiple laminectomy I needed the bike to have some cushioning, and this fit the bill. My gripes with it are these:

The wheels are just this side of worthless. I'm a 230 ish pound rider, and I've already popped two spokes and I have to perpetually true the rear wheel. The front is starting to go out too... I think the wheels are machine built. Then again, I have the non DX, so I don't know if the higher end one fixes it. Compare for yourself.

The other is the front shocks. The one I have doesn't have a pre-load, so as soon as I get on it, the spring bottoms out and keeps me in a more aggressive riding posture than I'd like. I'm looking at switching it out for a rigid fork. I believe the DX has preload capabilities, so it shouldn't be a problem for you... again, I'd check it out. The components are great otherwise, and the bike already has a few thousand miles on it... and I bought it in June.

Great bike, I love mine. You may want to have the LBS swap out the original seat; that cut-out in the saddle nose HURTS after a while. It was the second most uncomfortable seat I've ever had the displeasure to ride. The most uncomfortable seat I've ever had was the "tractor" seat that was on my Miami Sun trike for about 3 miles the day I bought it. I changed that seat to a "beach cruiser" seat at the first Wal Mart I came to on the ride home.
