I am beginning to see more and more of these butchered bikes show up on Ebait. Obviously if they bring nothing perhaps this practice will be discouraged by those who think this is a good way to make a buck. Take a nice bike and ruin it, hack the hanger off from it, I am not giving diddly for it.

I suspect that you are talking about fixie/ss conversions by "butchered"... am I correct?

Blame the late Sheldon Brown for a lot of that. I do get the benefits of using a single speed bike, but one thing that I do not get (and for some reason it is not mentioned in many places and it is so darn obviously logical) is the fact that every one who has a bike with several gear he/she can ride it single speed, if he/she chooses to do so and if they want to ride it like a fixie (i.e. no coasting, they can do that, too.) Just lack of education out there

Now, if you refer to the practice of breaking a bike down to its single components and selling it, that's a different story and a lot of that has to do with supply and demand (and the cost of mailing full bikes). A lot of people who are restoring their own vintage bikes are looking for components. Unless someone is willing to disassemble a bike and sell the components separately, there would not be a source of vintage components....

I am talking about taking a Pinarello or Olmo or Cioc or other fine bicycle and hack sawing the hanger from it and then converting it to single speed, ss, and then trying to flip it on Ebay or CL. I am seeing more and more such bikes, usually hack jobs. if it does not bother you, so be it, I am not participating in that, if I want a single speed I will get a frame intended for it, noit saw the hanger from my Pinarello and then take the brakes off.

but... I have not seen any SL or SLX based bikes out there as SS/fixed. (or 753/853 if that matters).

Most I've seen are lesser steel frames lugged to a bunch of modern components.

I'm sure those frame nearly break in half after having their rear dropouts moved 2mm.

I didn't like all the frilly stuff on this hetchins, so I've been at it with a dremel. about 40 more hours and I'll have standard lugs on this thing.

I found the tough part with these bikes is getting the stays straightened out.

It may break our hearts sometimes, but there isn't any law against butchering bikeframes. Maybe we should petition for the introduction of a 'classified frame' certificate (as an analogy with classified buildings):)

I don't know, but I get the feeling the fixie craze has revitalized the whole biking sport, and for every frame that gets a haircut, a dozen more nice old bikes are being dug out of deep storage and wiped off and riden as they were designed.
My proof is the English roadster.

The SS/FG forum does not condone butchering nice bikes; they usually tell someone with a really nice road frame to put gears on it.

The general advice is to not butcher any frame, in case it needs to be sold later.

There are so many good steel SS/FG frames on the market now it is not a smart move economically to butcher/hack/drew a nice old frame.

Indeed, the SS/FG craze has definitely brought in a lot more new riders. The utility/porteur bike is now coming into vogue once again. The Gary Fisher Simple City is a good example.

Try a plasma cutter. They're much quicker.

The supersport frame I ended up with had already had someone hack the cable stops about 1/2 way. I was planning on using downtube shifters, so I took them the rest of the way off. I wish Schwinn HAD a hanger... It'd make getting a derailleur on it easier!
If the bike is mostly complete and in pretty good shape, RESTORE IT. If it's like the one I got (Bare frame someone had already fiddled with) Do your own thing!
