Ooh, very nice bikes, especially the last one. But what I really want to know is, where did she get those red boots??

Very nice bicycles and outfits. Someone has the same green Pashley as I do.

How is that leather briefcase attached to your rear rack? If you know what I mean.

I mounted some pannier clips to the briefcase... the bungee keeps it snug.

There was a woman with a helmet like that at the "All British Cycling Event" in September. She looked quite elegant in it, riding her 1914 Raleigh "X-frame" bike:

It's Bicycle Repairman!

I had nothing to repair today... everyone's bikes were in fine running shape and all seem to have been polished up for the ride.

The old boy got a wipe down, I topped up the oil, and replaced some fender rods and nuts before I set out today.

We only had a few fixed gear bikes on the ride today... we stayed to the flats pretty much save for one little 1000 foot climb out of the valley.

A few people walked their bikes up that one.

Sure looks as if you've got the machine we'd expect our favorite superhero to ride, as you save bicycles from the threat of international communism.

Bicycle Repairman could only ride a Raleigh... unless he was in his civilian disguise.

I came pretty close to taking the '57 Peugeot on today's ride as it was some kind of windy and the 8 speeds were looking attractive... but she is better suited to the deli and market rides we do.

Oh that looks like so much fun!

It was a blast as I usually go on tweed rides all by myself and it was nice to have company...

The ride was neither long nor fast and many a flask was passed back and forth to stave off the chill of the day... we snacked on gingersnaps and brandy when we were in the valley and after a good little climb we made our way to a local pub to put back a few pints and enjoy each other's company and the local fare.

The sweet potato fries were excellent as were the pints of ale.

It would be just great to hook up with a group of people who were into riding old iron. I do hope to find a way to discover if there are any other collectors of old bicycles in Thunder Bay. Once found, we will try what you guys did, a vintage ride coupled with a vintage bicycle show and all in place to help promote our Bicycles for Humanity efforts in the city and surrounding area.

Good job and next time I am in your city, perhaps we can hook up for a ride.

very beautiful bikes. that must have been a fun ride. as long as you checking with your lady friend about her fabulous boots, inquire about that beautiful coat as well.

I am assuming that the wearer of the red boots is also the rider of the step through Mercier roadster. It just struck me that I have the man's version of your bicycle and I just got it recently. About the only difference, other that gender, is the brakes. Mine has cantilevered stoppers.

I do plan to clean the bicycle up and perhaps keep it for myself. I do like the roadster design and this one, fitted with original fenders plus lights(I think I have original lights for the bike) will be a hoot to view and ride. I know about the ride already since I tested it soon after bringing the bike home.

Bicycle Repairman!-Thank God for Monty Python fans !! Thanks for the wonderful pictures showing what bikes used to be. Last year I went with my friend to the Interbike East Show in October in Providence, Rhode Island. When we were done he asked for my impression. I told him that everyone's black carbon fiber all Campy 11 speed bike looked just like everyone else. Techno overkill.

I agree with jack! nothing has class or style anymore. it is like skinny blonde models took over bike design LOL! everything must be BLACK!! you can't buy colored cable housing, or tires with tan sidewalls. soon even jerseys will only be available in black or black with black graphics *giggle*

.... or the exact opposite : an avalanche of screaming big lettering in every imaginable colour - what someone on this forum once called the 'exploding clown' -look (I think he was referring to modern Colnago's, but it seems to apply to a lot of bikes and most of the team-jerseys () nowadays)

:D aint that the truth. Back in the day my dad carted home in his pick-up one of those home entertainment centers. Remember them?? It was a Sylvania with 25" color screen built into a richly decorated wood cabinet, complete with phonograph and stereo tuner. It was beautiful. These days when you go in to buy a new TV they're all plain black with no style. Of course the technology is there, but still..........

Nice pics 'sixtyfiver'. The gold Mercian is beautiful. My wife would flip over that one. :D

Check out the "Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour (http://www.3speedtour.com/)" and the "All British Cycling Event (http://www.abcetour.com/)"

Both are held in Minnesota, not all that far from Thunder Bay.

Nice...

I just had an ugly bicycle mechanical failure about an hour ago. The rear derailleur turned itself into a pretzel.

So... I needed to see some nice eye candy. I crave an old English 3 speed.

hey 65er, got any info on this Guerciotti?

Sixty Fiver
10-25-09, 03:19 PM
The Guerciotti belongs to another friend who just finished getting it road worthy... it is one of their nicer frames with some nice attention to detail and it is in very nice shape.

The frame and fork were donated to the bike co-op quite some time ago and he snagged them.

I need to move to Edmonton. I'm building a Zeus as a 5-speed cruiserish bike. I'm using Nitto Albatross bars with the grips up high, similar to that green bike in picture 1. What kind of brake levers do you guys like to use?

Only crazy people move here...unless they are from Winnipeg as then moving to a warmer and less bug infested locale makes perfect sense.

Those levers in the first picture are the stock levers that came with the bike... you could probably score a set at a bike co-op or salvage a pair for very little money.

The Raleigh levers are steel and are very solid with almost no flex which makes for a good lever... they have no barrel adjuster at the lever and need a stepped ferrule.

The levers on my '55 Raleigh are actually the originals... most people think they were pulled from a cruiser and are of a nearly identical design.

Research seems to indicate that the Lenton got hooded levers in '55 but believe the export models were a little different and Raleigh probably used up their stock of '54 parts in fitting out the newly designed frames.

My 1954 Raleigh has the exact same brake levers as my '55.

Anyways... there are lots of nice levers out there... I also like the aluminum Altenbergers that came on my Phillip's 20 as they are some of the lightest levers I have ever handled and they also work quite well.

Right on! thanks for the info. I wonder though if anyone's tried to retrofit old aluminum levers by brazing on a nut so u can put a barrel adjuster on it?

Eek, edit... Actually can u braze anything besides just steel?
