According to my sources, 12 gas storage tanks on the major refinery in PR, exploded. And the amazing thing, that happened a freeking week ago and it's still burning. Five counties in stage of emergency and here I past the whole week watching the balloon boy.
I've seen those tanks, they are(were) big.

Impossible. I watched GH and Sonny and Claudia are there for some high level mob meeting and there's no sign of a fire.

Uh, watch your local news? I actually logged on to see if anyone here actually lives in PR as there are stories going around my neighborhood, people are saying it was terrorist, they are also saying that there were other explosions around the island that have not been reported, all rumors till someone that lives there chimes in.

I live about 2mi from the oil refinery and it has been mayhem. The initial explotion was extremely loud, and the ground shook upwards to 3.0 on the Richter scale.

Can't wait for the English Only folks to blame it on their so called "Puerto Rican Terrorists" and use it as part of their anti-hispanic propaganda.
I have no idea what happened but I grew up there and here's my list of possible causes:
1) Some idiot with a high caliber weapon, shoot at the stuff to see what could happen.
2) The site was poorly maintained, leaked some oil and a spark started it all.
3) A distracted smoker.
4) A disgruntled employee.
5) An insurance fraud by the site's management.

I'm leaning towards #2 and #5.
Cost savings measures and failure to follow procedure most likely led to this explosion. When BP's plant in Galveston blew up, that was the primary reason. Big Industry sometimes likes to gamble with their bottom line and our lives. Sad but true.

You'd think with all the 24hr news channels it'd get more coverage but I agree w/you, everytime I flipped by it seemed to be something about balloon boy. I did see the story in the Denver Post, granted even there it was relegated to the back pages of the front section.

Don't blame us. If PR would just give up and take statehood, help would already be on the way.
It technically did not happen a week ago. It happened shortly after midnight on Thursday. It appears to be contained and under control. It was expected for it to take several days to contain. No one was hurt or killed. The air quality in San Juan is listed as satisfactory. All these things add up to make it newsworthy, but not world stopping.
Help is on the way. The US Coast Guard is on the scene aiding in the fight. Local companies like Pfizer and Abbott have sent their own fire fighting equipment to help.

Heres what the U.S. has done for Puerto Rico, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/1152449.stm in a nut shell, they took this area away from the locals, bombed it to hell, then, after years of the Puerto Rican people fighting to get there land back the U.S. agrees to stop the bombing, but, the U.S. declares the area a wildlife resrve and now the locals have no access to many parts on the island, and are getting cancer from the areas they can get to. Oh? did I mention the U.S. has not cleaned up the mess they left behind? you think that has something to do with the area being declared a wildlife reserve?

What does that have to do with PR being on fire?
If the Coast Guard is there, they want help. Otherwise the CG wouldnt be involved. I dont believe the CG is commissioned to be PR's fire department.

What does it have to do with statehood!? If you have to ask this after reading what went on you don't deserve an answer. Now, the Coast Guard is there 'cause PR is a Commonwealth of the U.S., again, not everyone in PR wanted this but they got it anyways, and like I mentioned in other post, 50% (last time I checked) of the PR's on the island do not want statehood.

EDIT! They havn't gotten it as the PR's are kinda seperated on the whole thing and the U.S. for whatever reason is keeping the island in their back pocket. Maybe it has something to do with this? http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/01/21/national/main537369.shtml
Well, I can say that there is not a control system failure mode that could possibly cause 12 individual storage tanks to explode.
This seems like a rehearsal, to me...

This is not mine, but it is from someone that lives in Puerto Rico.
"So far the only explosions have been on the oil refinery. As of now, there haven't said it was a terrorist act, although it wouldn't surprise me. They haven't said it was an accident either, they just haven't been able to investigate because the fire is still raging.
But, there is just too many coincidences. No one got hurt, except the power company which owned all that fuel. The power company (government) have been criticized extensively for 17,000 firings over the past month. This weekend there was a huge international convention of foreign investors looking to bring money to the island. After the explosion, security in the Airport has been tripled, security in other gov. agency just as well. If you ask me, someone pissed off is behind all of this, but no official statement has been done."

ATF and FBI are on the ground investigating. Fire was put out yesterday. I wonder if all the tanks went at once, or if it was a chain reaction. Reports are sketchy and list tanks as "damaged" etc. Numbers range from 11 to 20 of the 40 total tanks involved.
Grafitti found near the scene suggests that it may an attack of some sort against the petroleum company.

well MV you have to do a little research as to whats going on on the island, just off of the top of my head I can tell you that all was good till the U.S. took the island, people worked the sugar cane fields or the tabacoo fields and most tended thier own fields and made a living, the U.S. came, took the island, bought big business over that bought out the sugar cane fields, built big phamacutical companies that ruined the sugar cane and tabacoo trade in PR, most fields that were privately owned were sold illegally to mainlanders, and now a lot of those comanies are pulling out leaving a lot of people jobless and without land. Thats just one on the many things going on in PR since the invasion. Its like some stranger walkong in your home, eating all of your food, claming his home to be his, and then after a few days of this he asked you and your family to vote weather or not you and your family want him to stick around. :twitchy: Not to mention this: http://redirectingat.com/?id=42X129555&url=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.bbc.co.uk%2F2%2Fhi%2Famericas%2F1152449.stm (http://redirectingat.com/?id=42X129555&url=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.bbc.co.uk%2F2%2Fhi%2Famericas%2F1152449.stm) which I keep reposting for those that have chosen not to read.

After a week of investigation, it was indeed an act of terrorism. The terrorist has been identified thanks to a picture taken by turists that were eating in a nearby Burger King. The terrorist is still at large.

The thing is, most people will not want to go back to the lifestyle required to do what you are talking. Tourism brings a boat load of money to PR. Its a beautiful island, and well worth seeing. Hell, I'd live there in a heartbeat if the wife would come along. But to go back to plantations and sugar cane, most people would riot first.

Not the way the orig plantations worked, but if things are fair for the owners and the workers I'm sure it would work great. :thumb:Hell, look at how things are going with the coffee farmers!
