I am considering doing the (walmart) Kent Tandem with a 1000w 48v front wheel kit :thumb: The Kent tandem from walmart got great reviews and is only $265. Pretty hard to beat!!! I am not sure if the front fork is steel ??

Let's see your tandem pics :p

Are you planning on travelling long distances with it? because i was thinking of the same idea for 500 km trip to Montreal from Toronto.

I was thinking though more on the line of 72 volts, pulling a small two wheel trailer to store 100 ah battery pack. TOTALLY insane, TOTALLY doable.

I'm also talking windshield like thingy in the front and back for aero dynamics. TOTALLY cool, and did I mention TOTALLY INSANE? :D

errm.. i gotz not pics yet but your thread resparked the interest :thumb:

Here's a source for bicycle fairings (or windscreen). http://www.zzipper.com/Products/prod_upright.php Your trip sounds like fun. Have you watched Justin of ebike.ca's presentation about his trip across Canada on his e-bike, it was posted on youtube.com. It was an amazing trip.

A tandem recumbent would work great! More comfortble for the long ride. Already made for a fairing.

Zzipper makes several different fairings for upright bikes, too. The mountings they use should fit most upright bikes. Although recumbents look interesting, my concern has always been whether they're as visible on the road, since most sit lower to the ground. The one mode that I've seen on an electric recumbent that made great sense, safety-wise, was the addition of an amber safety strobe on a pole attached to the back of the bike. Hopefully, that would get motorists' attention.

I have a friend that had the same height concern. When I sit on my Lightfoot Ranger I am sitting as high as she is in her Ford Mustang.

I have to agree a powered tandem bike would be cool. Early this summer I also thought of powering a tandem but as I looked for the perfect bike to power I realized there were a few problems. The main problem being difficulty for my wife and I to mount the bike. First off we are both in our 60s and my wife is on the short side. Therefore, she needs a very low bar. While I do the normal “swing over” mount I found this no possible on most tandem bikes because of the back handle bar and of course to do a “swing over” mount to need to start the bike moving. OPPs, just left the old lady behind!! So I would need to do the girlie mound and slip my leg through the cross bars the same way she does. But I found this difficult to do on most tandem bikes.

Most of out riding requires us to car carry the bike to a forest preserve to ride. But most tandems are to long to go on the back of the car. One day while riding I saw the perfect tandem bike. It had a very low center bar on both front and back. The back handle bar was attached to the frame and not to the front seat post. This is nice because you can independently adjust the front seat and back handle bar. This bike also was “hinged” just behind the back handle bar. This allowed the front wheel to rotate 180 degrees. This made the bike about the same size as a normal bike so it was easy to transport on a car rack.

You may want to consider some of these things before you buy. By the way I did find this bike on sale on Ebay but it's not there now. But there is a simular one but it doesn't look quite as good.

you watched Justin of ebike.ca's presentation He came to Toronto, didn't have a chance to meet him. Very nice bloke, spoke to him over the phone and on emails. Helpful and knowledgeable. :D

I don't know if the video of his talk about the trip across Canada is still up on You Tube. If so, I'd recommend it to any e-bike enthusiast. It was long, but worth watching. I'm not sure those of us in the US would be able to duplicate it because there aren't as many outside outlets readily available in some communities here and I suspect that there may not be as many generous business owners or private citizens willing to provide a free connection to one of their electrical outlets (hopefully, I'm wrong). As he reached eastern Canada, it was starting to get cold. I don't know how he slept in his outdoor hammock. I guess it's the advantage of youth. I know that I'd have been checking into a motel room by that point. It will be interesting to see where his next e-bike adventure will take him.

You've got to love this one, although only one human rider can be on board.
