I'd go with the 3 wheel because the 1 wheel hangs below the crank sprocket and for a dirt bike I would think that would be a problem considing it is only 4 or 5 inches off the ground.

Don't understand 3 chain wheel. I have been looking at a Cyclone kit for use on a recumbent bike. Comfortable but terrible at hill climbing. What do you mean by 3 chain wheel?

My recumbent has a 3 sprocket front crank hub and 7 gear rear cassette, 21 speeds, and I was thinking of getting rid of the 3 front sprockets and going with a freewheeling single crank sprocket. The Cyclone motor has the power sprocket on the motor and a tension sprocket to bend the chain around the motor drive sprocket so what is meant by 3 chain wheel?

There are basicly two mountings methods sold with the Cyclone kit...a 1 chain wheel and a 3 chain wheel. I would guess that you would be interested in the 3 chain wheel for a recumbent bike. On the 1 CW the motor is mounted below and behind the crank sprocket. The existing original crank chain is diverted over the motor sprocket. Hence the name "1 chain wheel". I don't think this would work for your aplication. The so called 3 chain wheel mounts the motor to the lower "V" bar on a standard bike. The supplied new crank sprocket has a second sprocket attached to it. The motor again has a freewheel and of course the new crain sprockets have a freewheel as well. The motor is chained to one of the new crank sprocks and the second crank sprocked goes to the back wheel as normal. Hence the name "3 wheel". Wheel as in "sprockets". Go here and look at the 1 and 3 chain wheel systems. I don't think theyt sell the 3 in the US you would have to purchase from TW.

On a recumbent you have such a long chain, you can break it into two and put the motor inline. I have a number of the motor kits from electroportal (who designed them originally) on bikeEs and they go up hills nicely. I have some extra kits too.
