View Full Version : Snow riding on Sunday

OK ...So I went out for my first ride in the snow on Sunday. I've been a bit of pansy in the past and avoided riding in really cold or nasty weather. I was headed for the trainer as the snow was coming down pretty good when I noticed...hey it's not sticking and I hate the trainer:notamused: So I suited up and headed out into the snowy afternoon. I had a great ride out to and around the CC res and only saw a few people out and about. I was perfectly comfortable except for my sunglasses really fogging up or getting covered with snow at times so I could barely see:eek: I guess you could call it my first case of HTFU and as an added benefit I set a new 20 minute power record:thumb: Sadly the new record is still mucho weak:mad:

So who else was out in the snow yesterday afternoon?

I didn't have much snow up here and I still did not ride.
My mountain bike is ready for a good dumping of snow.

I only own my road bike....I hated Mtn Biking (all that crashing just seemed pointless)....guess I should have saved it for when the snow actually sticks this time I just got a little wet.

I picked up a set of Rene' Herse fenders for the old Puch at Veloswap on Saturday. Gave them a quick 20 mile test on Sunday.

I think I am going to like fenders.

I was out and about on Sunday, and will be again tomorrow. Tomorrow's storm is supposed to be bigger. :)

Pretty sure my road bike with the 700x23 slick tires isn't the way to experience actual sticking snow:(

you guys! I am impressed.
I've pretty much committed to putting the CF bike away for the winter and the Ti bike sits on the trainer as of sunday. It wasn't especially snowy (although for a while we had white out conditions!), but the winds have been kicking hard up here. I'm sure we've had some gusts up in the 50's are better. I rode saturday and it was vicious.
I'd certainly like to ride some during the winter, as a x-train accompaniment to xc skiing, but the days are few and far between when its not snowpacked and the winds are not howling. If I had a reliable same day Boulder weather report, I'd be more than happy to head down there on those days when I'm assured the weather is in the ballpark. I bought shoe covers this last year and would love to try them out.
Looking for close to a foot or more out of this weeks storm. Vail Nordic is set to open next week. Maybe we'll finally have a year where the xc resorts can open before thanksgiving.

You can PM me and I'll go outside and tell you what the conditions in my driveway are.

P.S., and then you can tell me what's happening at Eldora. Deal?

That is definitely a deal.
I started cleaning up the skate skis yeaterday. With two feet of snow on the ground by 9AM today Eldora Nordic could open before Thanksgiving this year. Looks as if I should get down my funky back country skis as well and get started on those.
Snowing like a SOB up here today.

Whipped out the rigid MTB today. Handled the snow with ease. The fenders were awesome with the slush on Denver's roads today.

I came into Auraria to find the fixed gear guys already beat me to the punch. I followed one in with no fenders. He had a rather nice stripe up his back.

Are you guys using studded tires on your MTB's in the snow? If not which tires do you have on your MTB's?

DataJunkie

The specialized knobby tires that came with my hardrock

I've got to go to work in this crap. The snow is over our windows (I live in a basement).

I put some cheap innova studded tires on the bicycle.

MTB????

What Mountain Bike?

And no studs here (Well... some of the ladies would disagree ;) ) ... I ride 35mm slicks all winter.

I thought about going out in it, but decided to wait for my fenders and pedals to come in. Boots don't fit all that great into the stock toe clip Specialized pedals, so I have some MKS RMX pedals in the mail to me. Kind of anxious to see how the Specialized All Condition Sport tires do in the snow, but don't want to wear the snow/slush, so I also await my fenders. And my MTB has the SPD(?) pedals, which I'm not so sure I really like anymore, and the shoes aren't really fit for winter riding anyways.

bmclaughlin807

I've got dual sided pedals... SPD's on one side (That I used once this past year) and platforms on the other.

Holy smokes you are nuts....I rode the couch and the trainer yesterday:innocent:

I not going back outside till the snow is all melted. I'm a very firm believer is staying rubber side down in all situations.:D

This thread makes me happy! I went out for my first snow ride of the season last Thursday morning (10/29) as I decided to play hookey to avoid the commute). I put some slicks on the snow bike for commuting and haven't switched back to a real tread yet. Definitely amazing exercise for improving bike control with the slicks in a 20" fresh storm.

One cool thing I noticed: The interior road around Wash Park gets plowed off real nice and early, leaving a nice crunchy frost, but not to much powder, great for a few casual laps.

Late to the reply.

No, I ride down 7th almost every day though. Some days when I switch things up, I take 12th.

I was just wondering if it was you I saw quite often in the snow. But, it appears you come from the east, and this fellow that rides sun or snow, comes from the west.

Oh, I forgot to post pics from the last snow:

The county/city took 3 days to plow anything out in Parker, so I spent most of my time hiking with the bike over my shoulder

EDIT: That's the first time I've ridden in snow deep enough to hold up my bike.

You seriously rode your bike in that deep snow?

No, I *carried* my bike in that deep snow. For something like 2-3 miles of my 12-mile (round trip).

For the rest I gave up and rode on E-470 (it was safe, honest), and on the way home I took a bus as far as it would take me (drops me off about 2 miles from home).

EDIT: To expand on the E-470 bit, there's construction on the road in my area, leaving a nice 45 foot wide shoulder for me to play on.
