I have an old Raleigh sportif that I just picked up on craigslist with cottered cranks. I was wondering what my options were as far as replacing the BB and cranks with more modern square tapers. How do I go about finding out that type of BB I will need to pick up?

Also maybe there's other options I don't know about?

Hi surfrida2007 -
I am not an expert in what BB interchanges with what, but just I wondered why you want to replace the cottered crank at all. ( I know they weigh a bit, but if it isn't broke -). Plus the old cottered cranks do have a certain panache, and for the money, you could buy some accessories instead.

Well I was thinking of doing a fixed gear conversion, and the gear ratio currently on there is a little high/low.

Then choose a cog that gives you the ratio you want. It's way cheaper to do it that way.
