Any of you Yankees know of a route from Whites Ferry to Manassas?

I'm using Adventure Cycling maps, but am leary of the route through DC.
I really want to avoid the city altogether.

Second that.... I have to go to Manassas on the 12th, and I'm bringing my bike. I'm curious to know what kind of riding they have out there.

Try http://bikewashington.org I have used their tips and local maps on several trips I have done in the DC area. They even have a map that suggests areas you may want to stay out of. I used their information on bicycling the C&O Canal and I found the information excellent.

I would suggest that your route keep you west of Rt 15. I'd head north from Whites Ferry to Lucketts. I'm not sure if the road over to Waterford is paved or not. I'd then head south to Hamilton, through Middleburg, The Plains, East on Rt 55, Rt. on Beverly Mills Rd., cross Lee Highway, head to Greenwich, down to Nokesville, and head east to Manassas staying south of Rt 28. There used to be a lot of back roads down there.

This is not the most direct route but it should keep you away from a lot of heavily trafficked roads. It's been a while since I rode back east but 8 years ago they were nice roads.

I located my copy of Cycleways II by Chuck & Gail Helfer from 1985.

According to this book, the best way from White's Ferry is to head south on Rt 15 (ugh!) staying on Bus. 15 into Leesburg. You'd get on Dry Miil Rd. (Rt 699) to Bus. 7 and into Purcellville (west of Leesburg). Head south on 690, lt 734, rt. 611, lt 626 into Middleburg. From Middleburg, rt. on Rt 50, lt. 626 to The Plains. From The Plains, head east on Rt. 55, rt. on 600, lt. Rt. 15 (very briefly), rt. on 600, rt. on 215, rt. on 605, lt. on 652 in Nokesville crossing Rt 28. The lt. on 646, rt. on 671, lt. 611, rt. 709, lt 651, rt 619, lt. 692 (Lucasville Rd.) into Manassas.

This takes you west of most development and then south before swinging north into Manassas. Pretty roundabout, 'tho.

Good Luck!

SteveE: Thanks for the input. Using "Trips and Streets" program I've come up with a pretty good back roads route following your suggestion.

Koffee: Do you want a route from Manassas to Fredricksburg? A friend gave me a MS 150 cue sheet and map.

Is Manassas what you are calling Bull Run?

Hi BEOWOLFE,

If you're thinking of going to D.C. that would really be out of the way. The two cities you mention are both west of D.C. so you would never be on a route (at least not directly) close to the capital city anyway (*scratch scratch*???). SteveE has posted pretty good directions - I'd go with that.

Um, why did you answer a 3-1/2 year old post?
