It was a really tough week but I was going against all odds for a job position. So much that the stress was almost unbearable.
I had to make a choice a while back to take a job in Washington DC and risk losing this position or holding out and hoping that I would qualify. There were others who, just as I, have waited years for this opportunity.
One other person even tried to 'steal' it from under me when they found out I had qualified to apply for it by pulling the seniority card line and calling headquarters to try to abort my application. When I confronted this person about it, I was told flat out by this person that I wasn't going to get it because I don't have as many years or as much experience in.
I am bottom of the totem pole seniority wise and my experience could not match theirs. But I had to maintain my strength, hold my head up high and believe in myself for I worked HARD all these years to prove to them I can do it to their expectations.
The person who called headquarters was told that the position was filled. I got upset, but kept myself together, wondering who won the prize.
A big meeting of the most important bosses was held this morning in regards to announcing their decision.
To my shock and surprise, It was me.
I am very, very thankful.
And I want to thank those who were there for me supporting me during this time. ((hugs))

Congratulations! I'm sure you've busted your ass to get this job, and that might have been a factor in your favour over the more senior people, who may act like they deserve a position instead of earning it. It's such a great feeling when they pick you!

Well done, and good job by the employer in picking someone who can demonstrate integrity and qualifications, rather than fulfilling the expectations of an entitlement mentality.

Siu - awesome. Having lived in DC and the DC-area for 4 1/2 years, and now 2 1/2 in California, California wins hands down. Yes, we have some bad traffic here in the 4 big urban areas (LA, SF, SD, and to a lesser degree Sacramento), but aside from LA its nothing like the nightmare of trying to get from Point A to Point B in DC... and a decent place in DC, housing-wise, approaches SoCal and SF prices. If you don't have to live in either of those places in Cali, it beats DC in every aspect, as far as I'm concerned, for day to day living.

Congrats! Any position in this economy is good!
Congrats, but watch your back. A coworker has already proved that they will try to get you from behind to get the job. Don't expect it to stop now that you have the job.

Silly you, KT. The DC job was working with Obama for six months on the health care reform, and housing was to be provided.
The position I have now is more along the lines of what I have been doing all along, it's just the position that everyone eventually wants to work towards.
In regards to the backstabbing, this person has always been the George Costanza of the company (remember the episode where he pushed the old lady to the ground to escape a fire?). A lot of this person's selfish doings have been noticed and in my heart I think that in this point in their life 'what goes around, comes around' is finally being realized.
Thanks everyone for the congrats. ((hugs))
This thread is really not to boast but mainly to point out that hard work, eventually, does indeed reap the rewards. Just be strong, keep working hard, and even though frustration sets in, keep doing the right thing.
The crazy thing is that my boss would see this frustration and he kept telling me that if I just keep on keeping on, I WILL get my wish. Just hang on and don't falter. My wish will come true. He promised that....
He had nothing to do with this decision, however. He is upset (as am I) that I will be leaving him.

Congratulation Siu! (It would have been nice to go on bike rides with you in DC though).
I hope you don't have to be close to that coworker that tried to derail the job for you. It's just not fun to be around people like that.

Congrats! They gave the job to the right person.
Having been in the position of hiring people many times, I personally find pulling the seniority card to be a MAJOR minus. Years of experience is nothing if they're spent doing nothing other than repeating the same year over and over. Anyone who thinks that they should be hired on the basis of years in the system rather than on what they do is almost certainly dead wood. Decisions should be made on the basis of expected performance and it sounds like that's exactly what happened here.

Thus why I'm an Iowa fan (and grad) and why I'm enjoying this season, as we are p'o'ing all the right persons in the sports media by continuing to win.
