Classic & Vintage - Cycling in the Netherlands in the 1950 `s

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Thanks, Macfred! Makes me long for summer again. That beach is only a couple of kms from my house.

Yeah, the carpenter/delivery guys in that video had nice rigs.
I've rarely seen anyone carrying anything big other than surfboards on the streets today.
Other than myself, that is. But I'm a weirdo foreigner.

That is very nice... thanks for posting. I love the trailers!
Here's a two-part part British promotional film encouraging cyclist to incorporate the train into their Sunday ride. It has been posted before, but is worth revisiting.

what a treat! strange thing is, even though there are more cars today, it doesn't look too unfamiliar for amsterdam!

Makes me sad for our own culture. Look at old pictures from the 50's of everyday people in the US and see what we've done to ourselves.

The culture is what it is, you can't "save" it. You can, however, ride the heck out of your bike, and teach your children to ride.
My town is as un-cycling-friendly as a town can be, and on our rides this weekend, I saw more bikes than I've ever seen before, both children and adults. It was a beautiful day.
I do believe a corner has been turned, and a new "bike boom" is growing. Things come around.
What up with all the women holding hands?

Sixty years from now, will people be watching films of Americans waddling around the malls? :p :innocent:
What a striking contrast.

In some cultures, men hold hands even today, as a show of friendship. I believe this is common in areas of the Indian subcontinent. On the other hand, girls around here hold hands all the time, and I live in Boston.

 I've seen that. Men holding hands in parts of Atlanta. I don't believe they are from India.

Yep, and people will say "Notice all the young women are Slender, attractive, and fit."

We sold wooden shoes in the drugstore where I worked in Holland, Michigan in the 70's. I walked or pedaled to work. Customers (4th generation Friesians) thought I was a 'foreigner' or other oddity. Later immigrants ( 1950's)were escaping post-war austerity, bicycling and other deprivations, I suppose For a while.. There was a bikestore in our building. Enjoyed the video: ja, thanks for sending it over by me once. George
