Training & Nutrition - How do do HR zone training when you can't stay in the zone?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I went out for a ride today with the intent of keeping my HR low. The ride out was fine with the wind at my back. But when I turned around into the wind I was fighting in my lowest gear against the wind past my LTHR.
How do you try to maintain your target HR when outside factors make it completely impossible?

Rider slower. I went out for a recovery ride with a 37kmh wind and was riding 42kmh on the way out and 22kmh on the way back but managed to keep my heart rate below 75% of LT.

find a less windy route.
here in TX the wind blows really really hard, many days.
if I'm out for a recovery ride, I stay in the suburban streets, behind houses and trees, and set up a winding loop so that I'm not having to pound out in the wind for extended periods.
in extreme cases, I'll just do laps around a loop that's sheltered. or, just go home... it's a recovery day after all.
