Location: Jfk memorial"
I think this is the JFK Cenotaph, the big ugly thing behind the red courthouse.

Note this link is referring to August:

And a video- I count about 30 people here, this is at the city hall, not sure if that ride started there or they just stopped by.

They started this several months ago, and I haven't been by one, maybe time to go. In the past, they had a notice on Craigslist, but I don't see one right now.

Well, I've heard very varied things about them. How terrible they are from people like me that have never been to one, and then how it's really not like that from people that DO go. So I figured I'd just whip over and check it out for myself. This being a newer start-up may help it a bit. Shoot, maybe they're in need of old fat slow law-abiding people to show them how to do things, you never know.

The facebook page says they go slow. One of the videos on there, shows them all whipping down the street fairly briskly. Definitely faster than my trike moves. So that may not work so well. I'll be there just the same, got me a couple of jack-o-lanterns to hang on the front and all. And if they drop me, that's okay, I'll mosey around a while and then work my way back to the car. I'll report back later. And planning to go ride in Ennis in the morning.

I always thought the idea of Critical Mass was to get a large group of cyclists riding through busy rush hour surface streets at a slow enough pace to piss off auto traffic while asserting their rights to the road.

Having it at 7:30 on a Friday evening is rather pointless.

Well, if it's more of a social ride, that's fine by me- probably has a greater chance of having a positive impact if that's the case. (I'll bet Tour Dallas does more good for cycling than 100 CM's, for that matter). I'll be there to ride around, not there to PO other people. I've heard a lot of conflicting accounts, and obviously not all CM's are the same, or not all like the worst ones; one reason for going in the first place. I generally try to get along with other people, drivers included. I'm also a driver, and I'll bet the majority of the people riding in this thing are, unlike, possibly, NYC or Chicago or Portland, so it's not like I hate motorists. By the way, on the video, I counted around 50 people there last month, sort of strung out in the riding.

If they're riding around in downtown Dallas on a Friday evening, there's no traffic to block anyway. Also according to that video, ain't so much riding, too! Last I heard about a Dallas Critical Mass a couple years ago was they gave up from lack of interest.

Well, I made it out there, and rode the trike around a bit. As best I could tell, they had right at 40 people. It was mainly a social ride, most of the people there seemed to know other people there, so there was about as much standing around and visiting as there was riding. And, a pretty varied group, too. Not a lot of hooliganism or anything going on, just a lot like some other group rides that I've been on. And met bikeforum member Kato7997 there. And there was a guy riding a Raleigh Sojourn just like mine. And another guy riding a cruiser complete with springer fork. Pretty cool. Several people in costumes of various sorts.

True, childishness has become synonymous with many if not most CM rides. The idea behind this CM is not to piss people off but instead to celebrate cycling in mass. I've been and it's a friendly ordeal, no riff-raff or other related nonsense. It's a great group of people and a fun, yet brief ride.
