Hey all,

I have an 1986 cannondale sr1000; in my stupidity as a young college kid i turned it into a single speed, and removed most of the components. Do you have any idea as to the value of the frame? Its a 60cm.

Ah, well, bad storm right now, but lets for argument's sake say fair condition.

All 86 Cannondale Criterion frames were exactly the same (except for frame size). Difference was totally in the components. Bare frames in 20+ year riding condition (e.g. war wounds included) are going for under $100. If you've done something to the frame while converting to a SS/FX, then less.

Most of the difference between let's say an SR400 and an SR1000 was in the components (which are now gone). That's a 20+ year old aluminum frame you have (and aluminum is less desirable and does not age as good as steel). I'd say $50 for the frame is probably a fair value. You might get more if you are in the right market.

Thanks! That's all i wanted to know. 50$ isn't enough to make me part with this frame. I was thinging of getting rid of it because i barley top 5'7, and its a 60cm frame. I have to lean it to get on.

FWIW, I paid $300 for a 95 R800 w/9-sp 105, new cable, new tires. I hear you on the size. Maybe you can trade it for a smaller frame.

Seriously, if you cannot use it (and what the hey are you doing riding a bike with a frame about 3 sizes too big :innocent: - I always go the other direction and get smaller frames for a good reason - but that's another discussion), as is, just sell it and get the proceeds to buy a frame that you are actually going to use. And that is very doable as far as value goes.

Yes, amazing how well a catalog picture ages. No sign of wear at all.

+1 Old aluminum frames have minimal value. Buyers want complete bikes. Good mid grade steel bikes are much more desirable.

+1 If you are in a large metro area, you may be able to work out a trade for a smaller frame on C/L.

Exactly. Just sell it and buy something that fits. It'll be money well spent.

There's a period correct 54cm frame up on eBay right now for under $100. Not in good shape and comes with a bunch of ratty looking Suntour stuff hanging on it, but hey, it's the right size and you can just pop the stuff off of yours and slide it right on. After painting it.

Then sell that frame to me and I'll do a build on it some time in the future.
