I also posted this in the regional (northeast) forum, but thought it might be good to post here as well.
As I was driving through Bethlehem yesterday, I saw a bunch of kids all trying to pile on one bmx style bike w/ front and rear pegs and someone perched on the handlebars.... So I started thinking. There are so many bikes of all sizes that get tossed out (either kids got too big or the bike needs a tube) would anyone on here be interested in gathering up said "junk" bikes and helping to fix them up for kids that can't afford a bike? If there is any interest on here about doing this, I'm going to approach a few LBS and see if they are interested in a tax write-off. If they donated basic parts, tubes, brake pads etc and I (we hopefully) donate labor and time to fix the bikes up (w/in reason, true junk bikes could be used for parts or sent off for recycling) there could be alot of happy kids/teens or even adults this holiday season. If you think I'm nuts, cool, if you want to help way cooler. I haven't thought out all the details yet but am open to suggestions etc. Think about it people!:thumb:

There is an organization here in the Boston area that does this called Bikes Not Bombs. Check out there web site. Colleting the bikes is the easy part. Getting parts to fix them and having a place to do it is another story.

After talking to a few people who have done similar things, it seems like my biggest issue is going to be Liability. I found an organization near me called C.A.T. (Coalition for Alternative Transportation) and it seems like I might be able to make this happen through them (after I become a member). Hopefully I can make this all work.
