I hope you can help identify the model of this Peugeot and give me some insight on bike's vintage and what is best for a bike like this- picked up today on the cheap, and since given a 1 hr cleaned-up. I've never owned a Peugeot-don't know a thing about them, but it appears to be relatively low mileage, shifts fine and wheels roll fine. Pieces include:
Ideal 2002 TB seat, MAFAC Competition Brakes, MAFAC brake levers, Peugeot decal/insert on side of stem, Reynolds 501 tubing, Simplex front and rear derailler (gold center on derailler, Stronglight crank with star shape, neat Rigada 28" wheels with scroll work on facing and inscribed with crolux followed by 3 stars and cromage superior written on them, Normandy hubs-don't remember what specifics it said on the hubs but it was something else as well, Christophe toe clip pedals. Cleaned up pretty decently for an older bike, except for paint chips. Also, if you could give me some pointers on how to restore a seat like this that would be helpful as well. The Ideal seat stickers are great, but the top is almost like suede in places-can I sand it down smooth, re-dye the leather and polish it up somehow, as it doesn't have any real holes? Thanks for any input.

Double check that tubing to make sure it isn't Reynolds 531.

Looks like a 1977 or 1978, Jim will be able to ID it exactly.

I think you may have a typing error as it pertains to the 501 decal... It really looks like 531 when I enlarge the photo.

It looks very much like this catalogue photo from 1977, borrowed respectfully from cyclespeugeot.

The decals, especially on the seat tube seem to match.

It's similar to my 1980 Super Competition... which means it rides great! ;)

I went back and checked the decals and even though they appear in good condition, it is hard totell if it says 501 or 531 the way Reynolds is written across the decal? Also, it is a 5 Speed if that helps?

Its a pre-'79 PX10, probably a '77 or '78 as mentioned by wrk101. From a value/collectabilty perspective the year doesnt matter much.

There is 1 huge major flaw with the bike and thats the wheelset. It appears to have 27" steel wheels with nutted hubs similar to what would be found on an AO8. OEM wheels would have been tubulars with Maillard 700 Q/R hubs.

I thought the wheels on it were 28s, but I'll check on that one again, as the catalog mentioned above shows all the wheels as 700? I have a stack of old tubulars, mostly, with Campy or Mavic hubs, just not sure I want to use them and this isn't a "trailer queen" at this point, so I might just stick with these wheels with the strange face etching-they are unique, not right but unique. Also, I'll try to go back and see if the seller still has the orig wheels and pump, not likely, but worth a try? Thank-you goes out to "all" for your valuable insight!.

It would never hurt to check!!! 28" and 700c wheels are indenticle in diameter. Oddly enough 28's are smaller than 2's. I suppose there's a possibility the steel wheels on your bike are 28's (700c's). Regardless, they're steel with nutted hubs and need to go.

Any of your existing wheels would be suitable.

+10 Steel wheels need to go. Set up well, this model has very good value. Or if you are looking to sell it, just sell the frameset. Those steel rims lower the value of the bike, it would sell for more with no wheels than with steel wheels.

I'd say yes but that is a poor photo. It's got the right lugs, rear chrome, Reynolds sticker on fork. Almost certainly a PX-10 or some close relative.
