"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Cadel leaves Silence-Lotto

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I couldn't believe it (http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/evans-to-leave-silence-lotto)
Sky, BMC and Garmin all seem like the main choices.
:EDIT: Cervelo, too.

No kidding, just read that too.
How about Astana IF Contador will decide to leave?
How about Wiggins to Sky and Evans to Garmin?
Columbia-HTM got the cash to sign him up probably too.
We shall see very soon.

I can't see him at Astana; first he has a bad team, now he'd have a team that doesn't get invited to any races?
Wiggins-Sky was my exact first thought.
Columbia has already put their faith into Tony Martin.
BMC seems like a good choice, IMO.

BMC holding the current and previous two world champions?... that should lock up all the race invites they would want. It would also give them a good GC candidate - they very well may have one that I'm not thinking of, but off the top of my head I don't recall any big GC names on their squad
If BMC, I see the Cadel.to.Garmin & Wiggins.to.Sky deal going down pretty quickly.

I really hope he doesn't end up at Garmin.

Columbia seemed resigned to going for stage wins, with Contador acknowledged to be the GC giant for the next few years. I don't think they'd want a guy who gets second a lot and who isn't getting younger.
I think Garmin works. Strong team, need to move up one more step. Probably better infrastructure and support too. Willing to bet on older riders.
Sky? Maybe, maybe cheaper than buying out Wiggins.
BMC? Another team with experienced riders. Quick Step (they've expressed interest in Contador too), don't know enough about them.
I think Cervelo isn't rich enough.
What about Astana? If Contador leaves, he leaves a team that has some reasonable support riders (Zubeldia, David de la Fuente?). But that would be like sticking a sword in your stomach, me thinks.
Interesting.

Now maybe he can get with a team that can give him more righteous support.

My guess is that until the Contador situation is settled Evans will have to wait. If Garmin has a shot at AC they will wait till that has been settled one way or another before signing Evans.

Contador and Evans up for grabs? That's kind of like Arod and Pujols both being free agents, only with hundreds of millions of dollars less on the table. But when is the last time when the two strongest potential Tour de France G.C. talent were free agents at the same time? That should make the 2010 BF Hot Stove League more spicy.

Armstrong? Sastre? Schleck?

You know what I mean. The top TdF contender and a guy who has finished 2nd a couple of times in the last 3 years is the strongest TdF GC talent pool you're ever going to see on the market at the same time.

Does having both on the market together bring their price down?

I don't think so at least not for Bert. I don't think the giant pay day is in store for Cadel. He's a sid rider but nowhere near Bert.
No one is though.
Cadel, while somewhat of a wanker, has proved he has the chops to win the TdF given the right team support. The fact that he's done as well as he has while on Silence speaks to how good he is.

Although maybe true, he has also failed to allow that same potential/chops show in other races as he has won practically nothing in the last few years.

Good point. Man what a lame team. I wonder what being on Lotto would translate to as a golf handicap?

That attack at the end of the World Championship RR was OUTstanding. Great moment for Cadel. Sure, he's a bit of a wanker, but it's hard not to admire anybody that rides that good with guts like he does at times. He's tough, he deserves a better chance @ the TdF with a better team.

maybe not sky, Shane Sutton is there and Scott Sunderland as head staff along with lots of young Aussies. You'd think he would fit in, but I'm not sure they would. Weird hey?

I would like to see him at Garmin. I like to see the American teams remain predominately English speaking (as if it affects me in any way) and Cadel fits there better than AC.

I love this quote from Gilbert....
Silence-Lotto teammate Philippe Gilbert twittered his surrpise at the announcement, calling it “great damage to the riders and a major catastrophe for the sponsors.”
Really? After the crap you said about him you are surprised he left? After the comments the team made about him after the Tour you guys are surprised he left?

Some jargon that he thought he was a whiner and wasn't going to actively go out of his way to work for Cadel. I totally paraphrased that, though.
BTW: First I predict Cadel for WC, then I predict BMC as the logical choice. I'm good.

Dare I say this is also a big blow to Canyon bike's advertising campaign?

That pretty much sums it up. The team also stated that they would never make the mistake or riding just for Cadel in the Tour again after his finish this year. Yet they were totally taken by surprise...

Wow, I never heard that. Really dumb.

The World Championship and the following 4 UCI races after it were still won on a Canyon, so not much.

[edit] Ok, I've read the article, and I think you're overstating this...it sounds more like reporters trying to make a story where there isn't one, to me; a non-issue.

Tony left BMC because he said there was no way that they would ride the TDF in '10. Now Tony must be crying Rock tears.

I didn't see him crying any tears tonight. He was happy to see his family for a birthday dinner.

You might be right. When he was teammates with a 7 time tour winner, he only rode and finished 3 Vueltas and a Giro. On a team without the Grand Tour experience that USPS/Discovery had he might have been Tour material.
My understanding was Tony left BMC because he didn't want to live in Europe again with all the kids he has.
This is the main reason. He didn't think BMC would get into the Tour this year, and he didn't want to base himself in Europe for two more years. His youngest son is 6 and his daughter just started high school. His kids are the world to him and he feels like he missed a lot with the two older ones and didn't want to miss any more for a possibility of doing the Tour in 2011. Obviously, he didn't know about Evans (the Rock deal and others were in the works for months). I agree that BMC's chances are way better but I still wouldn't say they are 100%.
I thought it was because he wanted to try to win another US Crit title.
He was a half bike length away this year with no leadout and no help at all during a tough race. Tony likes to think positive but he has been one of the most consistent finishers at Downers Grove over the last ten years. He's always on my short list of possible winners (I am a little biased).
