I'm moving to Fairbanks, AK in another week, and I'm curious about bicycle commuting to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), as well as general road biking in the area (I'm not an off-road guy).

Are there any local roads that are good enough for riding my Trek 600 during non-Winter months?
Will my Cannondale M500 be good enough with 26x1.9 tires, or should I spring for a Cross-Check or LHT? (no, no Pugsly)

Yeah, I know it's cold... but I spent two years as an infantryman at Ft. Richardson (Anchorage) back in the early 1970s, and I hate South Florida.

A> lots of roads and paths for rideing in the summer time, and you can ride along the highway, south you have 60 miles of hills then 300 more to anchorage / 60 more to denali (this is a nice ride)

you also have east and north roades to ride for long distance
