Wow! I've just completed my first century, 163km or 101 miles in 6 hours 6 minuters. :p . What an experience. This is my first summer cycling and until 3 weeks ago, I had only done a total of around 500 km. In the last several weeks I've been riding more seriously and and racked up another 540 km including todays ride. I live in Montreal and rode from the West of the Island to a town in the Laurentians (Morin Heights) and back. I did the ride there with one friend and we picked up a second friend from his place in the Heights. The ride there was mostly up hill and into the wind although that meant the ride back had a great tail wind and several downhills.

I'm feeling alright now although pretty tired. At about the 120 km mark though, I started getting some pretty serious cramping in my quads. As long as I was spinning easily, the pain was not that bad, however when I stopped peddling, or tried to push a little harder it felt like I was stabbing my thighs. I tried to make sure to stay hydrated (water and gatorade) and don't know what happened. The pain was still present (but to a lesser degree) for quite awhile after I finished. :( Didn't like that feeling.

I am curious now however, about what kind of riding people usually do the week after a century. I think I'm taking tomorrow off, and expect to just do some easy 40 km rides during the rest of the week. I figure that my body was a little abused today and that some recovery time is in order. Does that sound sensible?

Congrats on the first century and welcome to the club.

Give your legs a day of rest, maybe 2, but do some walking and stretching. Then get back on and start off slowly, spinning mostly and pushing only as hard as reasonably comfortable.

I did my first double 2 weeks ago (205 miles, 10:20) and found myself feeling surprisingly fine the next day. The second day I was sore and the third day after I was dog tired but no longer sore. I took a VERY easy ride to get the blood flowing on the second day and then took another day off.

Good luck.
