I am new to the cycling community, and currently I am riding a Nishiki Caribbo SIS moutain bike. I like the way that fits me but I am looking for more of a road style bike. I need to get a longer neck for the bike, and I was considering putting drop bars on it when I do it. I know that I am going to need new shifters, and brake handles. Is there anything that I should be worried about if I do put on drop bars?

I would like to just go buy a road bike, but I just dont have money just laying around.
I looked at some bikes at a shop and would like to get the Salsa Fargo. But Its going to take some time to save up the $1800 to get it.

There are perfectly serviceable 5 year old used road bikes out there for $300. Modern technology and all.

You'll spend more on the parts needed to change to drop bars than buying a used road bike.

Exactly. And if you did all the stuff that needs to be done it still won't be able to accept the narrow and light 700c wheels and tires. You can do some things to make the mountain bike more road worthy but it's just not that easy to make it into a bike that will ride like a real road bike that is purpose designed from the frame up. And while you're doing all this you'll be ruining your mountain bike for trail riding so you lose on both ends.

Look for a good used bike on craigslist.org or stop by your local bike shop (LBS) and look at their entry level road bikes. They'll most likely start in the $650-$700 price range.

Some shops will have a few leftover 2009 bikes.

I know you'll get a lot of hate on bikes direct bikes on this forum but have faith. I've had this bike for two years now and ride it every weekend. It has turned out to be MUCH more reliable than my LBS giant. Coincidence? Yes, i'm sure it is but honestly don't worry about the quality of the bike.

Also if you want to spend the $700 on a bike which you would have to do at a bike shop, you could get a Tiagra/105.
