I have a Campy Nuovo Record rear derailleur from the mid-1970's. Recently, my old six-speed cassette stripped and had to be replaced. My mechanic put a narrow seven-speed cassette on it. He also replaced the chain. It all works fine until I have to stand on the pedals, such as going up a steep hill in first or second gear (the cassette ratio is 13-23), at which point the chain slips down to the next smaller ring. I've tried fine-tuning the derailleur, with no luck. Is this a problem of component compatibility? Any advice? Thanks!

If you have downtube shifters, the shifters are slipping on it's mount. Tighten them.

I'm using Campy NR with a 10 speed rear wheel and have no such issues. It is likely the shifters as noted above. These shifters can be tightened on the fly. It may also be a bent or out of alignment rear der. The stress pulls it down.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried tightening the shifter, including on the fly, but I will give it another shot!

I am running a campy SR RD and a 7 speed Sunrace freewheel and a SRAM PC870 chain and am not having this problem (1985 Cannondale ST400 frame).

Could frame flex be causing this? Tried adjusting the RD so that it aligns the chain closer to the wheel on the low gear?

I've tried adjusting the rd closer to the wheel, but that was causing the chain to come off on the other side. The frame is in excellent shape: although old, it has never been in a crash or abused. I'm going to try putting some lock-tite on the shifter. Hearing that others with a similar set-up are not having this problem makes me think that is where the solution lies. Thanks for all the ideas!

Greg Lemond had the same problem with his Campagnolo-equipped bikes. His solution was to switch to Simplex Retrofriction shifters.

Greg Lemond had the same problem with his Campagnolo-equipped bikes. His solution was to switch to Simplex Retrofriction shifters.

Lemond wasn't the only one with that problem and solution. Simplex shift levers were a common upgrade on otherwise full-Campy race bikes. I know I did it to mine.
