and redesigns the levers with hidden shift cables, a la campy?

I doubt Shimano will ever make a hidden cables shifter. Some folks pretend it is a technological advantage - when it is purly visual.

There's no reason to redesign it so the cables are routed internally.

Back a few years ago - Campy sold a kit so you can convert your regular campy levers so the cables came out of the top (so one can use it on a TT bike setup).

The cables also come handy when you lean on your bars on your elbows and have something to hang on to.
