So I bought a carbon fiber fork from bikewagon for 89$

It should fit it's specification but the steerer is too long. What should I do?

Warranty states that any modification to the fork ie cutting the steerer down...voids it.


What should I do? This being my first time buying a fork, are there forks sold that are smaller steerer? Or are all long so the customer can cut it down?

Thanks for answering the dumb questions I have.

Haha, that's an awesome scam on their part. So far as I know, unless carbon is some kind of exception, nearly all steerers are cut after going on the bike since they are usually left long to be cut down to an appropriate size for the bike. Like I said, unless carbon forks are an exception your fork comes with a warranty that is basically voided the moment it is done being installed

uh what? its supposed to be long so the end user (you) can cut it down to your specific size! was it supposed to come in a specific size? i think its perfectly fine for a company to void the return if its been cut. duh?

Fitting a fork to a bike requires that the steer tube is cut to the appropriate length. That is not the same as modifying it.

whoops i didnt read it close enough. so yeah why would they void the warranty if the steerer is cut? weird... you should call them directly and ask why

Just cut the d@mn thing and install it properly. Voiding the warranty (yeah, right) on an $89 fork is one of the smaller problem you'll be faced with in life.

I think bmx forks are pre-cut, and the frames have built in headset cups.

I skateboard though, religously.

It probably has something to do with liability from some ham-fisted fool cutting one and damaging the steerer. Don't know what the process is, but perhaps improperly cut edges cause stress risers?
