Cyclocross - Post Your Vintage Cyclocross Bicycle Here

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Perfect thread for me. I just finished this yesterday (well, temporarily until I get a new stem and brake pads) My first cross race is Saturday so I've been working on throwing something together. It's an 84 Trek 520, running 1x8. Thought the sport touring geometry would work well, but I took it out yesterday and had some toe/front wheel overlap issues. Hopefully it won't effect me too much in the race this weekend.

I saw it in a cyclocross race, which IMO makes it more of a cyclocross bike than probably half the so-called cyclocross bikes on this forum.

We definitely need to rid Bike Forums of all these people who overindulge in posting pictures of their bikes. Luckily, I've only posted mine in three or four threads, so I'm good to show a few more pics (http://www.flickr.com/photos/26382505@N08/sets/72157622131473958/) of it here. ;)

Nice bike, you need to get that dent in the TT fixed though. Waterord lowers their rates in the winter on paint and repairs. If not call Jack Franklin of Franklin Frame in the Columbus OH area. http://home.windstream.net/franklinframe/

He did my Waterford, one of them actually. This is a 1995 Waterford 1200

I got no problem with that, but come on.
He's made four separate threads in two different forums (both of which have dedicated "pics of your bike" threads) and just posted the same two pictures every time.
If you're proud of your bike, take a picture when you change something on it and post it in the appropriate thread. Don't just start threads reposting the same photo over and over again in the span of a week.

Thanks, yeah I thought about restoring the frame, but I think it would get too expensive. There is also a crimp on the seat tube from the Front derailleur clamp, and I cleaned out a bunch of rust flakes from inside the frame. Also rust is bubbling through the paint on the chainstays.

The frame was not taken care of by the original owner- but I got it for $50. I can't see the point in paying about $200 on a frame I paid $50 for which will likely fall apart due to the inner rust.

EDIT:

And the cost of a repaint on top of that...

yeah awesome stem btw.

I picked the bike up in 2006. It was a 1995 Team Mak bike built by Waterford. That's the original Stronglight headset. A lot of early Waterfords used Stronglights. They were big on Waterford built Paramounts. Seeing as this was an early production Waterford there's a lot of Paramount influence in its design.

I have a blue RSE-11 that looks like the other cross Waterford posted earlier. Mine is set up like a touring bike now. I'd like to set it up more like a cross bike though.

The bike isn't really that cool. I never said it was. I found it in a field covered in rust. It is a no name lugged steel bicycle. I am just trying to see who else has done the same thing. I like vintage. I like to see things others have done. That is why I started this new post. If you are irritated don't reply on this thread. There are many others you can waste your time on. How many vintage cyclo cross specific bikes were there? I was always under the impression vintage cross bikes were just cobbled together.

TimJ
11-06-09, 12:06 PM
Cyclocross specific bikes came after the sport was invented but mass-produced cyclocross bikes have been around since the 70s at least. I'm sure cyclocross specific bikes were being made earlier than that.

I don't know what there is to get offended about, you can race anything you want in a cyclocross race but that doesn't make that bike specifically a cyclocross bike. It's silly to pretend there's no such specific thing as cyclocross bike, of course there is. What's the big deal? You convert a vintage road bike into a cyclocross bike what you have is a cyclocross conversion, not a vintage cyclocross bike. A vintage cyclocross bike would be an Alan from the 70s or something like that because that was a bike built specifically for cyclocross.

I mean, if you put knobby tires on your raleigh 3-speed from the 60s and ride it in the mountains is that your vintage mountain bike? No, it's a conversion. Vintage mountain bikes don't start until mountain bikes built specifically as mountain bikes start.

it's not a problem at all and good to see some constructive (some...) comments along the way....like the one about vintage cross bike vs. vintage CONVERSION...which i think was actually a nice articulation of the original post idea. so it's all good. :thumb:

still, i rarely expect to see grumpy responses here like i have on the road and mtb areas...they ARE the Venn diagram through which i pedal, but i am starting to prefer the cx set up no matter how it is done. i think my return to full rigid mtbiking got me partly into appreciating the cx vibe

i just bought a new aluminum rim with quick release to replace my quite vintage steel one....a new seat alloy seatpost on order...my vintage 'conversion' ought to look sharp soon..i'll post pics when i can:D

So what do you call bikes raced on mountains before factory produced MTBs existed? They were racing Schwinns on MT Tam in the seventies years before Specialized put the Stumpjumper on the market. Cyclocross existed in the Forties yet factory bikes weren't seen until the Seventies. Early MTBs and Cross bikes share a lot in common in their early days.

Oh geez man, are you kidding me?

Listen, if you're all oppressed because when you put knobbies on your old bike someone will occasionally say something like 'well that's not a vintage cyclocross bike, that's a vintage bike you converted to use for cyclocross', then I'm sorry for you. Hell, I'm sorry for everyone around you.
