Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Windsor Bicycles

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi. New to this forum. Was hoping to get some feedback re: two Windsor Carrera Sport bicycles that me and my future wife purchased new (from Conran's Bike Shop in mid-town Manhattan) back in '83. They were ridden over the course of a couple of summers and then stored away. They are dusty, and in need of maintenance to be road worthy again. The decals are chipped in a few places, but both bikes are intact.
I'm on the fence between refreshing them or just selling them. I've been quoted anywhere between $125 to $200 for the former; I have no idea what they're worth in their current condition.
All feedback appreciated.
Thanks.
Value will be highly dependent on local market conditions. Where do you live?
For others not familiar with the 1983 Windsor Carrera Sport;
Tange #5 plain gauge CrMo, main tubes only
SunTour Vx derailleurs with bar end shifters
Shimano 600EX crankset 42/52T
SunTour Pro-Compe freewheel, 6 sp, 14-32T
Dia-Compe 500G sidepull brakeset
Ukai aluminium, 27" rims laced to Sunshine low flange QR hubs
Sr aluminum bars, stem and post
Claimed weight 27lbs
MSL $310 US.
Northern NJ, Teaneck. About 10 minutes from the GW Bridge and 20 minutes into Manhattan.
And thanks for posting the specs...

Actually, they're on the downtube. I also noticed that both bicycles have center-pull brakes as opposed to the spec'd side-pulls, so maybe they are slightly older models that hung around the shop until 1983. As such, you should verify the specs I listed and declare any exceptions.
From my understanding Manhattan is a very high priced market. As such, I could easily envision you getting the upper end of the quoted range. But I don't live there or track the prices closely so let's see what other members think.
Thanks for the correction. Should I post this under "Appraisals and Inquiries"?
I don't know, I'd guess they're worth about what you were quoted for repairs. If you plan to ride them, its worth the investment, unless you want to do it yourself. It ain't rocket science but you need the right tools; if not, I'd just sell them as is.
If you can rehab them yourself, then do so. Buyers want ready to ride bikes.
If you are planning to have a shop rehab the bikes, forget about it. You will never get that $$ out of them on resale.
So sell them as projects or fix them yourself. Those are the two financially smart choices.
In my area, project bikes like yours would top out around $75. In ready to ride condition, about $100 more. A shop would charge you about $200 to do the service (including tires, tubes, cables, etc).
The choice is yours and your market could be better.
Thanks for all the responses. I'm not really interested in refurbishment at this time; I may try to sell them...
Any chance you can take picture of the grey one's drive side? I've got one thats I trhink early 70's late 60's that I wanted to know if all the parts where correct.

I would guesstimate that in fair to good condition they should sell for $125 or more. They were very nice bikes and can be tuned up easily.

I sold this one for $200 within hours of posting it on CL in Tampa.

Len, all of the components have date codes, little letters on the backside indicating month/year of production. You can look them up on www.vintage-trek.com
In their present condition you can try throwing them on CraigsList for $125 each...leave room for 'negotiating'.
Ouu thanks for showing pics. Mine apears to be all stock then. aside from being older. it has Silk rim liners on the rims, or some find of fabric
