Northern California - Cyclist struck by bus in Hayward

This is pretty bad. Apparently the street lights are not working and it was dark when the accident happened.

I saw that on the news yesterday too and the first thing I wondered was if he had a light. I see people riding without lights all the time, but apparently he had one. There's not much you can do to prevent someone from hitting your from the back if you are already riding in the bike lane. Sorry to see this happen.

... as the bus driver tries shirking responsibility by blaming a nonoperating street light for his unlawful and irresponsible crossing of a solid white line. So it's the city's fault? No, it's HIS fault.

Huh? Don't those buses have headlights?

I know that area well because I ride in this city often. The area where the cyclist got hit is not the best area of town, but regardless the buss driver here does have their faults. I do notice how close they drive to the bike lane here. There's been many occasion where I got nudge into the curb just from the force of the wind turbulance from the bus passing me at high speed. It does get nerve wrecking and I do wish the city here will do something about it. Matter of fact, a few weeks earlier, there was a car v's bike accident and the police were looking for info of the hit and run driver.

I've tangled with SamTrans bus drivers before. They're not looking and they probably don't give a d@mn anyway. I also used to ride the bus for many years so I've witnessed this first hand. Bike lanes or not, the quiet back streets are usually the safest. Stay safe out there people!
