Howdy folks,

I'm about to buy my first road bike (Specialized Allez Elite) and I'm debating on the pedals. I really would like clipless, but I also ride casually around my neighborhood when I'd prefer to just wear my sneakers. I have found the Shimano M324 pedals which have a clipless side and a platform side, but I wanted to see what else there was out there. I cant seem to find any others. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks!

Steve

I currently have Shimano PD-M424 on my Sirrus and they would fit the bill. Both sides are clipless and they have a platform around the pedal that you could use with normal shoes. I even think there is a full platform insert that can be popped in.

I have the Shimano M324 on a MTB, and they are decent pedals. They are fairly light for what they are, and tough to boot. I think the other Shimano models start to get a little overkill for road use as you move up the line.

You could also buy some Look pedals and a pair of these (just in case you don't like the MTB look/pedal set).

I have double sided m-505 (low end shimano spd pedals) that came on my mountain bike. Thought they were great, whenever I test road bikes they put these on for me. I road my friends Looks yesterday. OMG I like them 1000x better (for road riding anyway). The entry was EASY and getting out was just as EASY! The huge cleat on the bottom of his shoes hasn't been changed since he got the pedals in the late 80's :-0 I think I'm going to have to pay up and get road pedals + shoes when I decide to which road bike I'm getting :-0

Those clip on clips (is that what you would call them?) look perfect for me. Ajay213, where do you get those? Are they made by Look? Do you know if they make a straight up platform that would cleat in without the toe clips? Thanks!

oops scratch that last question. I just found info on the Winwood Deckster. That looks perfect for my needs. Thanks for the help!

Performance sells them (along with a bunch of other places I'm sure).

Here is the manufacture page

And no, it doesn't look like they make a straight platform that clips in. If you need that, one of the SPD options others have made would be the best bet (Personally I don't like SPD's on a road bike...or a MTB, except the shoe/cleat combo is nice).
